Maybe the One Piece was really matching the popularity of one of DC Comics' most famous heroes in sales.
In a social media post from @screentime, it's been reported that One Piece has now shared the title of being a best-selling piece of fiction, alongside DC Comics' Superman series. "The 'ONE PIECE' manga has officially tied the 'SUPERMAN' comic as the best-selling comic book series of all time with 600 million copies sold," the account claims. For clarity, they've added some context, specifically noting how long each title has been available for purchase and blatantly stating that "Superman sales haven't been updated since 2016." With a decade of data being undisclosed, it's not completely clear how accurate sales reports are in 2026.
One Piece and Superman have kept in stride with one another when it comes to the incredibly daunting, almost endless number of comics or manga chapters there are for each vastly respected cornerstone of entertainment media. It's estimated that there are thousands of Superman comics on the market at the moment, and it's been recorded that One Piece currently collects 1,175 chapters throughout 114 tankōbon volumes. Considering the massive demand for each, it's not a complete mystery that both One Piece and Superman have thrived in print media. Neither DC Comics nor Eiichiro Oda has commented on the overlap in sales, though DC Comics' Jim Lee has spoken about the current state of the manga industry.
“The stories told in Japanese manga and anime are incredibly powerful. I often find myself wondering, ‘What is missing in Western comics, and why aren’t they able to achieve the same flavor?’ Also, I think manga has an ‘advantage’ over American comics, which are mostly about superheroes, and that’s where the majority of sales and readers are concentrated," Lee explained to Nikkei XTrend.
One Piece and Superman Have Both Earned Wonderful Live-Action Counterparts
Image via NetflixWhile both the anime industry and the comic book industry have suffered their fair share of disappointing live-action media, Netflix and the DC Universe have apologized for such massive missteps. Netflix's One Piece was met with rave reviews and was greatly praised for its impressive ability to translate both the manga and the anime into live-action. The streaming giant was determined to honor the source material and worked closely with Oda in bringing their beloved series to life.
Similarly, James Gunn's Superman struck joy into hearts around the world, with great thanks to David Corenswet's genuinely heartwarming performance as the Man of Steel. Through sheer Midwestern tenderheartedness and a thoughtfully human storyline to follow, Superman dismissed the notion that superhero fatigue would slow down the Last Son of Krypton's success on the silver screen.
Both One Piece and Superman can be purchased wherever books are sold.
