The redcoats are coming, though this time, through an alternative take on the American Revolution as a Geoff Johns comic is brought to life.

Per Deadline, Atlas Entertainment and Ghost Machine have been confirmed to back a film adaptation of the comic book Redcoat. Written by Geoff Johns, Redcoat was deemed an instant sellout upon its 2024 release, and has continued to be a success for both Ghost Machine and Image Comics. Johns will write the movie's script, with no release date attached to the title yet.

Deadline also shared an official synopsis of Redcoat. "After a British deserter mistakenly gains immortality during the American Revolution, he is forced to face his cowardly past and fight against a sinister plot to destroy America. Reminiscent of the bombastic historical action in Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones, Redcoat pulls back the curtain of American History to tell the legend of the unknown hero. The comics are illustrated by Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), colored by Brad Anderson, and lettered by Rob Leigh," the entertainment publication notes. Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Atlas Entertainment are set to produce Redcoat. Notably, Roven served as a producer for Christopher Nolan's Oppneheimer.

Roven elaborated on his relationship with Johns prior to Redcoat hitting the big screen. "I have known Geoff Johns for many years and in some cases had a front row seat to his excellent work in the DC world. Johns and Hitch have formed a brilliant collaboration as writer and illustrator of the Redcoat comics, which have become a top-selling fan favorite. Redcoat is innovative comic material and ripe to become a tentpole," he said.

What To Know About Redcoat Before The Cinematic Adaptation Releases

Redcoat from The Unnamed

Redcoat Volume 1 was released on Mar, 5., 2025, introduces central protagonist, British soldier and "all-around rogue" Simon Pure, and follows his journey following the failed assassination of George Washington. Image Comics teases the titular redcoat's immortality as the plotline catches him in a timeloop, pitting him against iconic historical figures such as Benedict Arnold and Albert Einstein. The first volume features Redcoat #1-7 as a collective whole, and includes a variant cover.

Redcoat Volume 2 hit shelves on Nov. 5., 2025, and dives deeper into American history. "

In the late 19th century, Simon has his annual meet-up with his good friend John Chapman—aka Johnny Appleseed—and an unexpected calamity awaits them. He also meets the striking and skilled sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who always hits the bullseye…especially the one in Simon’s heart," Image Comics' official synopsis teases. "And during the most desperate time of America’s Civil War, a mysterious force threatens to turn the tide of key battles by handing the Confederacy an unthinkable victory! Only Simon and the enigmatic new American Myth known as The Northerner stand in their path. But can these two unlikely soldiers put aside their differences long enough to stop a catastrophe?" Redcoat Volume 2 combines Redcoat #8-14, and only uses one cover.

Redcoat can be bought through Image Comics, in comic book shops, or through other online retailers. The Redcoat movie does not have a release date.
