The sequel to ‘Mortal Kombat’ (2021), ‘Mortal Kombat 2’, is set to hit theaters and IMAX October 24, 2025, and some new images were recently shared by Entertainment Weekly showcasing additions to the cast and returning characters. The film will expand on the action, drama, and mythology of the popular video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias and will feature big-name actors in major roles.
Karl Urban has been cast as Johnny Cage, the charismatic Hollywood wrestler noticeably absent from the first film. Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise, says that Urban brings a fresh take to the character, balancing comedy and depth. Director Simon McQuoid describes Cage as an entry point for audiences, offering humorous moments without turning the movie into a comedy.
Other new additions to the cast include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn. Returning actors from the previous movie include Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and Tadanobu Asano (Raiden).
The plot centers around the Mortal Kombat tournament, with Earthrealm facing off against Outworld. If Earthrealm loses its tenth consecutive tournament, Shao Kahn will invade and conquer Earth. The film is expected to explore several different realms, and will utilize the IMAX format for a more immersive experience in certain scenes. ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ aims for a larger scale with a promise of increased intensity compared to its predecessor, but it remains to be seen if it can stay true to the franchise and still appeal to a broader audience.
