“The Crimson Calypso”

Hyboria has as many legends as it does heroes. Some are celebrated through song and poetry, while others are mere whispers, passed like vagabonds from lip to ear. In one such susurration, a warrior; nay a she-devil with a sword, would find herself entangled by  half-truths and treachery.

This is the tale of the Crimson Calypso. A statue born of evil and sought for nefarious purposes. From across the Western Sea it came, bringing death to a partnership as maiden and crone betray one another. Will this be the end of Red Sonja? Her fate is revealed within…

Review

“You must never allow yourself to be loved by another man unless he has defeated you in fair battle, something no man is like to do after this day.” – Vow of Red Sonja.

Dynamite Entertainment seems to have thrown the baby out with the bath water, as Red Sonja enters her lesbian years. Go figure. I guess “Noir” is a code word for college female sexual fantasies. If you’re a Red Sonja purest, as I am, then this may not be the comic book for you.

Red Sonja Noir was well produced, with art by Edu Menna. The story by David Avallone, on the other hand, could pass as some plot to a 1980s softcore porno tape. You know, those VHS “classics” the video stores always kept behind dark curtains. This one-shot gets two out of five stars from me.
