Reminder: It’s Free Comic Book Day/Comics Giveaway Day This Saturday (2nd May)

5 days ago 13

The first Saturday in May is always a significant date in the comic book calendar. It has been Free Comic Book Day for more than 20 years, an annual event where comic books are given away for free in more than 2,000 comic book shops. Free Comic Book Day is happening again this year on Saturday, 2nd May. However, this year it’s a bit different, sharing the day with a parallel event called “Comics Giveaway Day“.

What’s Free Comic Book Day? What’s the deal with Comics Giveaway Day? Read on to find out all about it.

Free Comic Book Day - 1st Saturday in May! - May 2, 2026 - freecomicbookday.com

Since 2002, Free Comic Book Day’s mission has been to introduce the general public to the marvellous medium of comics by enticing regular, lapsed, and potential readers into comic book shops with free comics. Offering free stuff is always an enticing carrot to get people through the door, and Free Comic Book Day has become an annual gateway for new readers to experience comics. It creates a low barrier for people to sample the medium for the first time and experience the unique culture that comic book shops cultivate.

Many comic book shops mark the occasion by turning Free Comic Book Day into a big event. They host parties, offer generous discounts, host creator signings and artist sketches, stage cosplay competitions, and other wonderful activities. These events are a lot of fun, and it’s fantastic to witness people of all ages enjoying the festivities.

Comics Giveaway Day is a wrinkle in the Free Comic Book Day cloth. It’s a parallel event run on the exact same day, operating in pretty much the same way. Why it exists comes down to how comic book distribution has splintered in the last year. Diamond Comics Distributors, the owner and facilitator of Free Comic Book Day, went bankrupt. The Free Comic Book Day name and branding found their way to Universal Distribution, which has collaborated with Lunar Comics Distribution to facilitate the event. However, not all publishers fall under these distributors. Penguin Random House – distributors of Marvel Comics, Boom Studios, IDW Publishing and others – couldn’t come to an agreement with Universal Distribution and has decided to run their own event under the name of “Comics Giveaway Day”.

As a result, some of the free comics will feature Free Comic Book Day branding while others will have Comics Giveaway Day. This will depend on the publisher and who they are distributed by. Beyond the name, there’s not a whole lot different between the two events, and it’s likely most comic book shops will treat them the same.

While “free” and “giveaway” are in the events’ names, it’s worth noting that not every comic in the comic book shop is free. Each year, a selection of special comics is produced by participating publishers. The selection changes every year and can feature original material (acting as a prelude to an upcoming story), reprints, and excerpts of upcoming comics and graphic novels.

There will be 46 comics available for free on 2nd May, 2026. This includes 24 titles with Free Comic Book Day branding and 22 with the Comics Giveaway Day branding.

Some of these include:

Most shops will stock every title or at least most of them. – often in varying quantities. Additionally, the first-come, first-served aspect of the day can mean that some titles may not be available if you arrive in the afternoon. Many shops limit how many free comics you can get so that as many customers as possible can participate on the day. While each store differs, many will allow you to choose additional free comics beyond the limit if you purchase something in-store.

Another thing to be aware of is that the comics are free for customers, but cost the shop money to order. So make sure you give them a big “thank you” and perhaps spend some money there if you see something that interests you.

If you’re getting free comics for children, it’s worth noting that not all comics will be suitable for them. There’s a colour coding of the Free Comic Book Day and Comics Giveaway Day logos that indicates age ratings.

For Free Comic Book Day, the age rating system goes as so:

  • Green is All-Ages. These comics are appropriate for kids.
  • Blue is Teen(+). These comics are for ages 13 and older.
  • Red is Mature. These comics are for adults.

For Comics Giveaway Day it is:

  • Green is All-Ages. These comics are appropriate for kids.
  • Yellow is Teen. These comics are for ages 13 and older.
  • Red is Mature. These comics are for adults.

Comics are not the only thing that will be given away for Free Comic Book Day. Universal Distribution, which is primarily a board game distributor, has brought Upper Deck, Wizards of the Coast, and other trading card companies into the fold. As a result, some retailers will have trading cards to give away too. Not a lot of details have been revealed about this at the time of writing.

So, where do you find a Free Comic Book Day/Comics Giveaway Day event? Most comic book shops participate (find one near you) to varying degrees. (While they will give out the free comics, they might not host activities.) This year, some game shops will be getting in on the action, too

Don’t stress if you can’t attend on the day. Some shops will offer free comics in their online stores. Additionally, publishers make the comics available for free digitally, either on the day or soon after.

Finally, the most important thing to remember about Free Comic Book Day is to have fun. Bring along family and friends and join in the festivities. Mingle with like-minded individuals and discover some fantastic new comics.
