Transformers #31 was first teased back in January, with the issue promising to mark the beginning of a whole new era for the entire Energon Universe. Skybound Entertainment Executive Editor Ben Abernathy said of the upcoming issue at the time, "Megatron is one of the greatest villains in modern entertainment history, and this issue will be groundbreaking for the Energon Universe."
The History Of The Energon Universe, Explained
Image via Skybound EntertainmentThis shared fictional universe made its debut with the release of Void Rivals #1 (by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Mat Lopes, and Rus Wooton) back in 2023. Since then, the Energon Universe has come to include Void Rivals, Transformers, and the ongoing G.I. Joe title, not to mention various one-shots and limited series that have offered readers an even greater glimpse into one of the most explosive settings in comics.
The Energon Universe has also introduced entirely new concepts to recontextualize the wider narrative at hand, all while throwing some of pop culture's most iconic heroes into some of the most harrowing scenarios imaginable. In 2025, the release of Transformers #25 saw the culmination of one of the Autobots and Decepticons' most brutal battles, during which Optimus Prime was left impaled on a massive spire, only to somehow still emerge victorious in the end.
One of the most recent major shakeups to the Energon Universe came just last month with the release of G.I. Joe #19 (by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge, and Rus Wooton). The issue saw Optimus Prime and G.I. Joe leader Duke cross paths for the very first time, setting up what could be the best nostalgia-fueled crossover of the decade.
Transformers #31 from Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics goes on sale April 8.
