The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #14, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The new Ultimate Scarlet Witch has finally arrived, and she's taking a few cues from both her original Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe predecessors.

After making a major strike against Roxxon's infrastructure, the eponymous heroes of The Ultimates #14 (by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Fedrico Blee, and VC's Travis Lanham) find themselves staring down two of the biggest threats they have ever faced in the forms of the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Raised nearly from birth by a cold and cruel Emma Frost, these two are every bit the villains that their adoptive mother had hoped they would be. Even worse, neither of them seems to be interested in questioning any part of that tortured origin for themselves.

The original Wanda and Pietro Maximoff of the mainline Marvel Comics timeline of Earth-616 made their debuts alongside the rest of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants all the way back in 1963 in the pages of X-Men #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. While the two have gone on to become generally heroic figures in the more than sixty years since then, both the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver began their comic book careers as abject villains. Of course, the pair started off as fierce foes of the X-Men rather than the Avengers, which wasn't the case for them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the MCU, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) were first seen in brief cameo appearances during the mid-credits scene in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. At the time, the two were being held prisoner by Hydra, though it wasn't long before they were let loose upon the wider MCU. In 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, the pair returned, initially as part of the eponymous villain's army before discovering the truth of Ultron's plans and standing against him. While Quicksilver's life was lost in the fray, Wanda has gone on to carve out a massive MCU legacy of her own in series such as WandaVision and films like Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
