This spine-tingling comic is getting the Prime Video treatment, with a second season already in the works.

Scoot Allan is a Comics Jr. Editor at CBR. He has worked in the industry for over a decade and has written for print and online media sources like ScreenRant, The Gamer, GameRant, Movieweb, EGM's Geek Magazine/GeekExchange, GrizzlyBomb (where he penned The Slushoverse Theory), WhatCulture, RoguePlanet.tv and the Urban 30 before joining CBR.

Fans have been celebrating the work of Scott Snyder for the last few years, largely due to his run on the main Batman title, various spin-offs, and, more recently, his brutal take on the Dark Knight in DC's Absolute Batman. He was kind enough to stop by for the latest episode of CBR's Heroes Journey podcast with CBR's Deputy Editor Sean O'Connell and Heroes Journey Producer Sierra Nutkevitch, where he discussed what's to come in Absolute Batman. However, he also gave fans of one of his best horror projects a new update about an exciting new animated adaptation coming to Prime Video, Wytches.

Scott Snyder teamed with iconic artist Jock for the six-issue series from Image Comics. Wytches followed young Sailor Rooks and her parents as they attempted to find a fresh start after a haunting series of tragedies, though they soon found themselves the target of an ancient and terrifying group of beings that share very little in common with the witches from spooky stories and the Harry Potter books. Snyder and Jock reunited in 2018 for a follow-up one-shot called Wytches: Bad Egg Halloween Special that further expanded on the world created in Wytches, leaving fans wanting more for years. Finally, news broke that an animated adaptation of Wytches was picked up by Prime Video, though updates have been sporadic since. Scott Snyder gave fans a big update when he sat down with Heroes Journey, teasing an exciting cast and plans for the second season while thanking other series and creators for opening the door for Wytches and other adult animations and adaptations.

Scott Snyder Was Tight-Lipped But Excited About The Cast

While we are still waiting for official announcements from the animated adaptation, Scott Snyder was able to reveal that Wytches has locked down its cast, even if he isn't able to reveal it quite yet. "Let me think what I'm allowed to say. I am not allowed to tell you the cast yet, which is amazing." It was a small confirmation, but one that should excite fans.

Prime Video's other comic adaptations have all featured incredible casts that have elevated those stories off the page, which bodes well for Wytches. He then further detailed where they are in the first season's development, who he's working with on the project, and where it's going in the future:

"We're up to the stage now where we're doing the animatics of the whole first season. We get our pilot back really soon. I can't wait to see it, but we're extremely proud of the series and it's going great. We're almost done with production. We go into post-production in the spring, and again I just I love it to death. My co-showrunner Marianne Dayre, who's unbelievable. The writers on it were great. The studio we work with -- Powerhouse in Austin -- they're fantastic. And Kevin Kolde, the producer, does Castlevania and a bunch of shows that I love. So I feel really, really lucky."

Marianne Dayre also worked on shows like Echo, Better Call Saul, and The Act before bringing Wytches to Amazon's Prime Video. Netflix's Castlevania was an animated hit that adapted the classic video game, bringing it to a new audience while rewarding long-time fans of the franchise. Wytches comes from Plan B Entertainment, Project 51 Productions, and Amazon Studios, who revealed a bit more about the animated series when it was first announced.

“Driven by the pairing of Scott and Jock along with our partners at Plan B and Project 51 Productions, Wytches fuses nail-biting horror and evocative drama while unearthing the dark lore surrounding an ancient burrow of witches,” revealed Melissa Wolfe, Amazon Studios' head of animation. “Given the haunting and intimate nature of Scott and Jock’s well-regarded comic series, we are looking forward to delivering their creative vision to our global audience and expanding our growing roster of animated series.”

Snyder was just as excited about the upcoming animated series in the original announcement:

Wytches is possibly my most personal work. It’s all about the monsters that dwell beneath the surface of things, both literally and figuratively. I’ve been intimately involved with this animated series from the start, and I can honestly say that I love this show as much as the book, if not more. The animation brings the incredible art by Jock to life, and the episodic format expands the world of Wytches, taking the characters and mythology to terrifying new places. Jock and I are deeply grateful to Plan B Entertainment, Kevin Kolde, and Amazon Studios for believing in Wytches and giving us a chance to make this show dark, personal, twisted, and very special.”

One of Prime Video's Hit Adaptations Deserves Some Credit

During his Wytches update on Heroes Journey, Scott Snyder also gave a shout-out to another Image Comics adaptation and its creators. Invincible has been a huge hit that has laid the foundation for series like Wytches and other comic adaptations to reach a new audience. It's an exciting time to be a comic book and animation fan, which is also clearly felt by the Wytches crew, who are still hard at work on the new series:

"The first season, again, is being animated. The second season is written, so we're really excited. I can't wait. Invincible has done great for them, so kudos to Robert [Kirkman] and Ryan [Ottley] and everybody over there, too, for paving the way for a lot of the kind of R-rated animated adult stuff coming. I'm really excited for this."

Wytches still doesn't have a release date, but it sounds like fans will get their first look at the animation soon if the second season is already being written. In the meantime, readers can stay up to date with Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's Absolute Batman and the current DC K.O. event from DC Comics, as well as current issues of Undiscovered Country and The Department of Truth from Image Comics.
