As I read these issues of the main event book something became clear to me. This is the first big event where the main event book made itself kind of disposable. They spends a lot of time on a big group battle in Times Square, but most of the rest of these issues “check in” on stories better told in spin-offs and tie-ins. And even the big Times Square battle is re-told with more depth in some of those other issues.
Anyway, the main points of these issues are:
Point one: Spider-Woman is a skrull. The reason for the tribute to the Tobey MacGuire/Kirsten Dunst kiss on the cover…

…Is because rather than deny that she’s a skrull, she tries to seduce Tony Stark into believing that he, too, is a skrull. It’s cool because we the readers aren’t sure what is true and, frankly, many of us were hoping Start WAS a skrull so that we could explain his dickish behavior ever since Civil War. But he’s not.

Point two: The heroes of the world are useless without Nick Fury, who rides in with his new team to save them all at the end of issue #3.

Also, Nick has a very, very big gun.

Point 3: Osborn is even better at being Nick Fury than Nick Fury. Although better established in the Thunderbolts tie in, he immediately proves himself to be in full control while the world seems to be ending.

The skrulls seem to be winning at the end of these issues. But we’re heading into the third act of the series so that makes sense. It’s time for things to turn around. Hinting at that, we see pockets of resistance forming–notably, Red Hood is gathering the criminal underworld to go after the skrulls. And also, Thor and Bucky Cap appear in shadows.
