Spider-Boy’s Twisted Clone Is What Nightmares Are Made Of

1 month ago 16

The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Boy #16, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's Spider-Boy is about to have to fight his own twisted self for the family he only just got back.

Spider-Boy #16 finds the titular young Wall-Crawler staring down the final fight in the gauntlet known as the Dragon's Challenge, the winner of whom will inherit total control over the ancient band of assassins called the Gaping Maw. Luckily for him, Spider-Boy is more than capable of pulling through even the worst of circumstances, leaving him and his mentor turned confidant Daredevil standing victorious over the competition. Unfortunately, all this time abroad has left Bailey Briggs' home life completely unattended, giving Boy-Spider just the opening he needs to step in and take over without anyone around to stop him.

First seen in the opening story from 2024's Spider-Boy #4, "Nightmare Scenario," by Dan Slott and Paco Medina, the strange, skittering figure known as Boy-Spider is the result of a failed attempt to replicate Spider-Boy's then-secret origin. Because of Bailey Briggs' unique introduction to the Marvel Universe as a being woven into its very fabric after the fact, his "creator," Melodia Stillwell, aka Madame Monstrosity, had no recollection of the process she purportedly used to turn the young child into the Spider-Boy of today. As such, she went to great lengths to recreate the process, which ultimately only succeeded in giving rise to a far more arachnid version of the same character.

Fortunately for Bailey, it wasn't long after he rose up and defeated Madame Monstrosity once and for all that the rest of the world regained their "lost" memories of the young hero. Apart from ordinary citizens suddenly remembering Spider-Boy's high-flying heroics, Bailey's own mother finally remembered the son she didn't know she lost in the first place. Since then, the pair have tried to reclaim the family life that was stolen away from them, though Bailey's career as a kid superhero hasn't made that any easier than it would be otherwise.

Spider-Man’s Next Nemesis Could Destroy the Entire Marvel Universe

The most dangerous villain from "The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" has finally made his presence known, and it is not the demonic Cyttorak.

Another key Marvel character to be profoundly impacted by the sudden return of their memories of Bailey was Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil, who previously helped Spider-Boy hone his arachnid abilities. This not only opened the door for Bailey to reconnect with another hero, it paved the way for him to join Daredevil in an intercontinental adventure unlike any he had ever seen before. With the emergence of the latest Dragon's Challenge, numerous teams of young warriors and their elder mentors were lined up against one another in a gauntlet of 2-on-2 battles to determine the future of the Gaping Maw. When Bullseye and Funhouse entered the ring, Daredevil had no choice but to sign up for himself and put a stop to his old enemy's plans, and Spider-Boy was the best partner he could have possibly asked for.
