The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Man '94 #2, on sale October 8 from Marvel Comics.

The deadliest villain in the entire Spider-Verse has officially arrived where it all started, and there is no telling how much damage he will do.

A preview of Spider-Man '94 #2 (by J.M. DeMatteis, Jim Towe, Jim Campbell, and VC's Joe Caramagna) from Marvel Comics finds the titular hero facing off against some of the least threatening yet unexpectedly dangerous villains New York City has to offer. While Spider-Man has no trouble beating down the likes of the Kangaroo, Gibbon, Leapfrog and Grizzly, they aren't the only threats waiting in the wings for him. In fact, before things can get too heated, the dreadful Morlun makes an appearance to claim Spider-Man for himself, even if the Wall-Crawler has no idea who he is.

Introduced back in 2001's Amazing Spider-Man #30, the ancient energy vampire known as Morlun is one of the many Inheritors native to the reality of Earth-001. There, the Inheritors' patriarch Solus transformed his kind into totems of the leech, imbuing them with vast power in exchange for the need to feed on the life force of other totems. Eventually, the Inheritors began hunting Spider totems across the Multiverse, leading to Morlun's initial confrontation with Spider-Man. In the decades since, Morlun and his fellow Inheritors have been at the heart of numerous storylines, yet they have never been truly successful in their villainous endeavors.

Spider-Man '94 is quite possibly the best place for Morlun to appear, as the series serves as a continuation of 1994's Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which effectively created the concept of the Spider-Verse in and of itself. It was during the final season of Spider-Man: The Animated Series when the concept of the Spider-Verse was originally introduced, albeit without the iconic name attached to it. The season largely focused on the ongoing battle against the Jackal, the relationship between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, and the emergence of multiple versions of Spider-Man from across the Multiverse. Unfortunately, it also ended on a cliffhanger, one which involved the real Mary Jane being lost on some unknown world and Peter Parker vowing to rescue her.

Ahead of the release of Spider-Man '94, series writer J.M. DeMatteis discussed what fans can expect from the title, explaining that "The 1990s Spider-Man animated series has become a beloved part of Spidey lore—it was the introduction to Peter Parker and his universe for an entire generation—and I’m delighted to be diving back into that universe." DeMatteis continued, "We’re treating this as the next season of the show, which means introducing new villains, new challenges, new adventures for Peter—while doing our best to remain true to the creative spirit that John Semper and Company established with the original show."
