The following contains major spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #68, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Marvel Universe just lost Spider-Man again and this time, there is no magic answer to bringing him back.

With the threat of the Blight now ready to overrun the Marvel Universe, the titular hero of Amazing Spider-Man #68 finally snaps out of the nihilistic depression he has been suffering through, though not in time to save the lives of his closest loved ones. In a desperate bid to do the right thing, Peter trades in his remaining Reeds of Raggaddor to resurrect those who lost their lives due to his inaction. As heroic as that is, it leaves Peter with no mystic Reeds of his own when the dreaded Callix catches up with him, and as such not even Death himself has any way of bringing Spider-Man back from this latest demise.

One of the dreaded Scions of Cyttorak, the demonic Callix was first seen in the form of a vision of the past in the pages of 2024's Amazing Spider-Man #61 by Joe Kelly, Ed McGuinness, and Niko Henrichon. These eight infernal beings all answer to the god-like Cyttorak, who rules over the Crimson Cosmos and lends his power to impossibly strong figures such as Cain Marko, better known as the Juggernaut. Throughout the years, the Scions of Cyttorak have taken part in a series of battles with the former Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, who helped establish the rules of these confrontations as part of a mystical covenant he reached with Cyttorak personally.

At the outset of Marvel Comics' "Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" event, Peter was chosen by the current Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom, to serve as the champion who would stand up to the Scions of Cyttorak upon their latest trek to Earth. To aid Spider-Man in his mission, Doom gave Peter a specially crafted Spider-Man suit imbued with all kinds of runes, wards, and sigils that have helped give him an edge over the competition. Peter was also given eight Reeds of Raggaddor, mystic artifacts capable of resurrecting a person from any one instance of death.

The most dangerous foe the Fantastic Four have ever known has finally taken over the entire world, and the response is not what the heroes expected.

Despite initially believing that he was fighting to protect the world from Cyttorak himself, it was recently revealed that Doctor Strange hadn't been all that forthcoming with the details surrounding his deal with Cyttorak. Instead of standing as the first and last line of defense against Cyttorak, Strange had actually been protecting the Marvel Universe from an ancient, undying force known as the Blight. Unfortunately, when Peter decided to walk away from his duties and leave the likes of the X-Men to fight his battles for him, he broke the mystical contract that had been holding the Blight at bay, opening the door for it to enter the primary Marvel Universe and transform Callix into its relentless emissary.
