Per Bleeding Cool, Kieron Gillen recently opened up about his experience writing the upcoming story from Super Creepshow #1 from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment. Gillen recalled being asked to write a short story for the anthology, which he was initially hesitant about.
"It's only 10 pages, right? That's a couple of days' work. In reality, generating a specific idea you think is worth a damn is the thing," Gillen explained. "And when I'm doing that, I'm not concentrating generative energies elsewhere. Also, you do realize that effort is the same no matter whether the story is 10 pages or six issues. There's more work down the line if the story is longer, obviously, but a core idea is a core idea."

"However, 'horror short with superhero flavor' was actually something I had some ideas lying around for," Gillen continued. "I sent them over. One fit the bill – and actually my favorite, a story idea that I've had for as long as I've been reading comics as an adult. Great, eh? Except when I sat down and thought some more, I realized the story idea was bigger than 10 pages."
"And also just plain bigger – I realized it's the sort of thing I could use to launch a whole book off. And I swiftly realize that I want to keep that door open, just in case. So I ended [up] apologizing, withdrawing it, and then doing what I was trying to avoid, and work out a whole idea from scratch," Gillen added. "Creeping was it. You may be able to see what we're riffing on."
Set to be released in March, Super Creepshow #1 will be the first issue in a new series spun out of the Super Creepshow Special, which featured a variety of terrifying tales, all with a superpowered bent. Not only did the issue prove to be a major success, but it also further cemented the Creepshow franchise's place in pop culture after the feature film trilogy and Greg Nicotero series spawned from George A. Romero and Stephen King's 1982 original.
Super Creepshow #1 will set the standard for the series going forward, with each issue featuring two spine-tingling stories from all-star creative teams. First up, Kierron Gillen and artist Rossi Gifford will take fans on a journey that Skybound Entertainment promises "will have your spider sense tingling," followed by writer Ryan North and artist Derek Charm's exploration of how super speed can quickly become a far worse curse than it is anything else.
Following the announcement of the upcoming Super Creepshow series, Skybound Entertainment Executive Editor Ben Abernathy discussed exactly how it came to be. "We were so overwhelmed by the incredible reception to our Super Creepshow Special that a miniseries was a no-brainer," Abernathy stated. "Adding superpowers to the horrific Creepshow formula proved to be a recipe that many creators couldn’t resist!"
Super Creepshow #1 goes on sale March 18, 2026 from Skybound Entertainment.
