Star Spangled War Stories v1 #164 featuring the Unknown Soldier, 1972 - In a back up story, a GI fights for his life against a Japanese soldier who turns out much younger than anticipated. Alex Toth captures the terror of hand-to-hand combat, using silent panels for dramatic effect. The artist uses a grid of equally divided panels, but his masterful pacing and layout heighten the scene's intensity. The subtle color palette also plays a vital part, reinforcing the somber mood. Joe Kubert's cover seems garish by comparison, but otherwise fits the bill. This story was later reprinted in DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #21. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Dan Spiegle. This is 64 of 96 Star Spangled War Stories issues by Kubert and 1 of 1 Star Spangled War issues by Toth.
