One of the most controversial episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series is about to be retold with a truly surprising twist.
IDW Publishing is set to bring back one of its most underrated and widely beloved lines of Star Trek comics with the release of Star Trek Deviations: Threads of Destiny #1. Set to arrive in comic book stores everywhere in February, Star Trek Deviations: Threads of Destiny #1 will retell the events of the classic 1967 episode "The City on the Edge of Tomorrow," albeit with an unexpected yet infinitely valuable twist. This time, it is Lieutenant Nyota Uhura who is sent back in time to an era when humanity was still struggling greatly with its worst prejudices, and the future will never be the same because of it.

The official solicit synopsis for Star Trek Deviations: Threads of Destiny #1 from IDW Publishing reads, "In the 23rd century, she explores far-flung star systems with her crew on the Enterprise as part of her mission to communicate and build bridges with life found across the Galaxy. But in the 20th century, humankind was working to build understanding among themselves, with African Americans on Earth championing the Civil Rights Movement and using their voices and acts of protest to end racial segregation and discrimination."
"Now, by way of the Guardian of Forever, Uhura is yanked back through time to 1963. There, she’ll join all those fighting for equality and justice and reconnect to why her work as a communications officer is perhaps the most important work of all."
The original "The City on the Edge of Forever" saw Captain James T. Kirk and Spock venture into the past in search of a missing McCoy, who had been transported to 1963 while in an unhinged state. When McCoy's actions disrupted the timeline, Kirk and Spock made the trip to retrieve him and undo the damage he had caused. In the process, Kirk fell in love with a woman who, tragically, he was forced to let pass in a fatal accident to not further alter the timeline.

The Star Trek Deviations line of comics is one of the most beloved by fans of IDW Publishing's take on the franchise. Deviations offers readers an alternate version of a story that they already know and love. Back in 2017, the line was introduced with the release of Star Trek: Deviations #1 by writer Donny Cates and artist Joshua Hood, which reimagined humanity's first contact with intelligent alien life, specifically in the form of the Romulans rather than the Vulcans as in the classic timeline.
