Supergirl Budget Report Blasted By James Gunn

Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

It would make perfect sense to assume that Supergirl is costing DC Studios more than a pretty penny to make. However, a recently reported amount for the upcoming superhero movie's budget was quickly called out as a miscalculation by none other than James Gunn.

Forbes Australia published a profile on Milly Alcock, who stars as the lead of Supergirl, as part of its 30 Under 30 Issue this year, which describes said film as a "$200 million DC feature." This prompted Lakshman Sai Kumar Tumati to reach out to the DC Studios co-head over the accuracy of the number on Threads, to which Gunn responded that it is "not even a little bit true."

Gunn does not elaborate on the matter any further, leaving the true price to produce Supergirl up in the clouds for the time being. There is also no telling how or where Samuel Hussey, the writer of the Milly Alcock profile feature for Forbes Australia, got the idea that the budget amounted to $200 million, but it is not an unreasonable number at all.

It is rare these days to see a comic book movie that costs less than $200 million, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's $180 million Thunderbolts* being one of the more recent exceptions. In fact, the budget for Marvel Studios' following release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, even rounded out to $200 million.

However, curiously, the budget for 2025's Superman, in which Alcock cameos for her debut as the cousin of David Corenswet's Man of Steel, has also been up for debate. Despite direct information from Warner Bros. and DC Studios claiming the film was priced at $225 million, the Columbus Business Journal reported that the final cost was really $363 million, citing the official Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit website as its source.

In his typical fashion, James Gunn took to Threads to debunk the findings, branding them as potentially "faked." Yet, a source for The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the number was accurate.

What Is Known About Supergirl

Whatever the cost, the movie certainly sounds like a pricey production based on Supergirl's official plot description. It follows the Kryptonian, otherwise known as Kara Zor-El, on a personal adventure through the galaxy celebrating her 21st birthday with Krypto when she crosses paths with Ruthye Marye Knoll, sending her on a "murderous quest for revenge."

As established, Australian, 21-year-old former House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock leads the Supergirl cast in the title role. She is joined by the likes of The Old Guard's Matthias Schoenaerts as the main antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley of 3 Body Problem fame as Ruthye Marye Knoll.

David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham star as Kara's parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, as well as Reacher's Ferdinand Kingsley as Ruthye's father, Elias Knoll. However, one of the most exciting Supergirl castings is Jason Momoa as Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter, in his much-anticipated return to DC movies after portraying Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe.

Supergirl is directed by fellow Australian Craig Gillespie, known best for helming the Academy Award-winning I, Tonya and Disney's live-action 101 Dalmatians prequel, Cruella. Ana Nogueira is penning the screenplay, which takes inspiration from Tom King and Bilquis Evely's graphic novel, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which was also the film's original title.

Supergirl soars into theaters on June 26, 2026.
