Superman and Batman ready themselves to face an underseas threat Image via DC Comics

Superman's new romance is a turn that no one saw coming, and it might mean war.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #36 finds the titular heroes working two sides of a brewing war between the forces of Atlantis and the armies of Tritonis led by King Ronal. As it turns out, this entire affair has been orchestrated by none other than the Floronic man, though that is hardly the most surprising revelation. In the heat of the action, it appears that the Man of Steel found a kindred spirit in the form of the Tritonian Queen Lori Lemaris, and all it takes is a single kiss to send her King into a murderous rage.

Lori Lemaris and the undersea kingdom-city of Tritonis first appeared back in Bill Finger and Wayne Boring's closing story from 1959's Superman #129, "The Girl in Superman's Past!" At the time, Lori was posing as a human in order to study at Metropolis University and get a feeling for the world that stood above the ocean. When Lori crossed paths with Clark Kent, the two embarked upon a flirtatious friendship that quickly blossomed into an unexpected romance. While the pair had genuine feelings for one another, Lori didn't feel that their respective lifestyles could ever afford them a chance at happiness, and so she ended things before returning to the sea.

The first iteration of Ronal to appear in the pages of DC Comics was introduced all the way back in 1960's Superman #135 in Jerry Siegel and Wayne Boring's "Superman's Mermaid Sweetheart!" This story continued the saga of Superman's failed romance with Lori, this time with the Man of Steel going so far as to offer up a proper marriage proposal to his Tritonian love. Before making up her mind, Lori is grievously wounded by a rogue fisherman. When the Atlantean, or possibly alien doctor Ronal arrives and saves Lori from an untimely demise, the pair immediately fall in love, leaving Superman to once again grieve over his own broken heart.

Jason Woodrue, better known as the Floronic Man, made his DC Comics debut in 1962's The Atom #1 by Gardner Fox and Gil Kane. Originally an exiled dryad-like entity operating under the guise of being a genius scientist and botanist, Woodrue was obsessed with trying to take control of the world's flora in a bid to claim total dominion over the entire globe. To that end, Woodrue developed a formula that transformed him into the monstrous, plant-like form fans know today. While the Floronic Man of today has a decidedly less fantastical origin, he is still just as much of a threat as ever before, especially for the likes of Poison Ivy.
