The following contains major spoilers for Action Comics #1082, on sale now from DC Comics.

DC's Man of Steel has just been taken down by a completely unexpected enemy.

Set not long before the events of Amanda Waller's world-changing war against the heroes of the DC Universe, Action Comics #1082 finds the Man of Steel reining in and subsequently interviewing the villainous Major Disaster. When Superman can't quite come to terms with his old enemy and former ally's most recent fall from grace, he takes to interviewing others who worked with Major Disaster over the years, the last of which leaves him walking home through the streets of Metropolis at night in the form of his mild-mannered alter-ego, Clark Kent. Unfortunately, this makes Superman a prime target for a brazen mugger, although nothing about the encoutner explains how said common crook could possibly draw Kryptonian blood.

Although the specifics regarding Superman's various powers have changed in demonstrable ways over the past nine decades, the Man of Steel has long been impervious to nearly any and everything his opponents could possibly throw at him. This generally impervious nature has been a key fixture of the character since his debut Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's opening story from 1938's Action Comics #1, "Superman, Champion of the Oppressed." Among the few elements that Superman has historically been susceptible to are Kryptonite, the radioactive element left behind in the wake of Krypton's destruction, and various forms of magic, which the Man of Steel has long been ill-equipped to fight back against for himself.

In recent months, Superman has become just one of many DC superheroes whose powers were radically altered as a result of the Absolute Power crossover event, which charted Amanda Waller's all-out war against the likes of the Justice League. With an army of Amazo androids at her side, Waller was able to steal away with the powers of many of the world's most capable heroes, including Superman. While Superman was left without his Kryptonian abilities, he took it upon himself to begin mastering minor feats of mysticism, adding to the character's ever-expanding superpowered repertoire.

One of the Justice League's most important members has just disappeared along with the entirety of his gleaming undersea kingdom.

While Superman ultimately reclaimed his powers after the fall of Waller's Amazo army, he is considered particularly lucky in that regard. Many heroes, including Plastic Man and Aquaman, were imbued with the powers of others when said superhuman abilities were released from the possession of the Amazos of Waller's Task Force VII. Even Lois Lane has found herself imbued with a set of Kryptonian abilties to match her husband, all without realizing that they originally belonged to one of the deadliest Kryptonians of all time - General Zod.
