Supernatural Returns After a 5 Year Absence With All New Stories

2 weeks ago 10

After 15 seasons and 327 episodes, Supernatural, the iconic fantasy adventure TV series, finally ended. Now, nearly five years after the last episode of the TV series aired, the Winchester brothers, Dean and Sam, will be returning for brand-new stories in their own Supernatural comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment, just in time for Halloween!

It has been over a decade since there had last been an official Supernatural comic book series, and when there was last a comic book, it was by Warner Bros.' own comic book company, DC (through its Wildstorm imprint), but Dynamite continued to pursue the license for years, and now, that pursuit has paid off with Dynamite launching its own Supernatural comic book series.

15 Years Later, Eric Kripke Revealed His Original Ending for Supernatural (& It’s Much Darker Than Fans Realize)

Supernatural's "Swan Song" is hailed as Eric Kripke's perfect finale to the series, but his ending is actually much darker and unsatisfying.

When is the new Supernatural comic book series set? Who is the creative team for the series?

The new series is set between the first and second seasons of the TV series. The show always made it clear that Dean and Sam were hunting down monsters and ghosts in stories other than what we saw on TV, so there is plenty of room for new adventures for the Winchesters. In addition, this means that a number of characters we've lost over the years will now be available for the creative team to use in the series.

Speaking of the creative team, the book will be written by superstar writer, Greg Pak, who will be paired with artist Eder Messias, who recently worked with Pak at Marvel on the most recent Captain America: Sam Wilson comic book miniseries. The cover of the first issue will be by star comic book artist, Clayton Crain. Among the variant covers for the first issue will be covers by Messias, David Cousens, and a photo cover featuring the original stars of the series, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.

Is Supernatural Coming Back for Season 16?

Since Supernatural ended five years ago, fans have been hoping for a revival and waiting for the Winchesters to hit the road for season sixteen.

What do Greg Pak and Eder Messias have to say about the upcoming assignment?

In a press release by Dynamite, Pak discussed the project, noting, "A couple of dudes in a cool car chasing monsters, demons, and ghosts? Tongue-in-cheek, but deeply-felt emotional story of sibling rivalry and family tragedy? Hugely fun, anti-authoritarian heroes and vibes? Look, I was hooked with the ghosts, but I'm all in. Fans of Supernatural know the show is a blast and it's an enormous pleasure and privilege to be able to dig into this wild world, especially with Eder Messias. We're going for fun and grounded, and then we're going to absolutely cut loose when the time comes. I can't wait to show more, and thanks so much to everyone for coming along for the ride!"

Messias added, "When I received the invitation to work on the Supernatural comic book series, I almost fell out of my chair! It is by far my favorite television series. Here in Brazil, on Saturday nights, they would show four episodes in a row. After that, we would spend the week talking to friends about the next episodes. I'm looking forward to bringing this story to fans and giving it my best!"

Supernatural #1 is due out in October.
