Avengers #24 marks the final chapter in the eponymous heroes' ongoing cosmic heist. After confronting the Black Cat and Kang the Conqueror, the impossibly powerful Grandmaster, and even the dreaded Myrddin, the Avengers are finally able to put this drawn out saga to a close and return home for some much needed respite. Unfortunately, in the time that the Avengers have been away, one of their oldest enemies has laid claim to the entire planet, and it is far too late for Earth's Mightiest Heroes to do anything about it.

Doctor Doom's long-running plot to take over the world began coming into focus during the events of Marvel Comics' Blood Hunt. This crossover event saw the skies all across the globe plunged into darkness as part of an attempted vampiric takeover led by Blade who, at the time, was possessed by the spirit of the very first vampire, Varnae. Although the Blood Hunt itself would eventually come to an end, it was only after Doctor Strange relinquished his mantle of Sorcerer Supreme to Doctor Doom that the skies were parted and humanity was given a proper fighting chance.
In the wake of the Blood Hunt, Doctor Doom sealed himself and his kingdom of Latveria away behind mystic shields for months on end. This drew the attention of heroes such as the Fantastic Four, who made it their mission to discover exactly what their old nemesis was planning. In a devastating turn, this insistence on getting to the bottom of Doom's schemes and their relentless search for answers ended up playing right into their adversary's hands, as it was the Fantastic Four who ultimately delivered unto Doom the Fated Blade that was the last necessary piece for him to carry out his plan.
