He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
With 2022's The Batman, co-writer and director Matt Reeves introduced a new, grim and highly intriguing version of Gotham City that would expand two years later with the HBO series, The Penguin, which picks up pretty soon after where the comic book flick leaves off. Apparently, The Batman - Part II picks up pretty soon after where the TV show leaves off.
While promoting his latest movie, The Ballad of a Small Player, which becomes available to stream on Netflix on Oct. 29, Colin Farrell spoke with ComicBook.com, during which his role in the Batman Epic Crime Saga as Oz "The Penguin" Cobb was brought up. The Academy Award nominee would then reveal the following details regarding the time setting of the highly anticipated sequel to The Batman.
[The Batman - Part II] will pick up, whatever, a few weeks after the show ended.
It had previously been confirmed before the series premiered on HBO that The Penguin is set one week after The Batman, which ended with Gotham in disarray after Edward "The Riddler" Nashton (Paul Dano) successfully flooded the city with car bombs that destroyed its surrounding seawall. The series was touted as an eight-hour bridge between the events of the Robert Pattinson-led DC Comics adaptation and its highly anticipated sequel, which has now been revealed to take place a couple of weeks or so afterward, courtesy of Farrell.
The Irish actor, who appeared in The Batman as Oz Cobb only a handful of times, previously unveiled that his ruthless, scar-faced crime boss, once again, plays a marginal role in the script for The Batman - Part II, which he also praised as being "unbelievable" and "extraordinary." However, learning that he would be "only in it a little bit" left some fans disappointed as they assumed that he would be an even greater threat to Bruce Wayne's alter ego following his violent rise to power in Gotham's criminal underworld in The Penguin.
Will There Be A Penguin Season 2?
Image via Warner Bros.Well, even though The Batman - Part II may be light on appearances by Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, that just leaves room to see more of his criminal exploits in The Penguin Season 2, right? Right?! A definitive answer to that is hard to come by at this point. ComicBook.com also asked Farrell about the possibility of seeing another season of the Emmy-winning crime drama as a gap between this upcoming sequel and an unconfirmed third chapter of The Batman series.
"Oh, I don’t know," Farrell said, "I have a bit of a, generally speaking, I have a bit of a negativity bias. Apparently, I’ve been told by various people close to me. So I would say I would bet against, but not by much. I know that the powers that be are thinking of storylines that could justify another eight hours because it all goes off Matt Reeves’s world... But I kind of bet against, but not by a wide mark."
So, it appears that the star of The Penguin himself only has the thinnest sliver of faith in there being a second season. The actor even said he wasn't sure if The Penguin Season 2 was a good idea, but would be open to the thought of undergoing the multi-hour makeup job to become Oz Cobb for another go if the story was good enough.
Of course, another reason why fans are dying for more of The Penguin is to see more of Cristin Milioti's Emmy-winning portrayal of the vengeful, power-hungry Sofia Falcone, whom fans would at least love to see appear in The Batman - Part II. Unfortunately, Matt Reeves would confirm that he and co-writer Mattson Tomlin were so deep into the script by the time she stole the show that there was no room for her in the story.
If The Penguin Season 2 does not happen after all, hopefully, Reeves at least finds a way to incorporate Sofia into The Batman 3 where she can finally meet her half-sister, Selina "Catwoman" Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), if The Batman 3 happens.
The Batman - Part II is currently set to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2027.
