It’s time for everyone’s favorite lesbian couple to take the spotlight! The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All—affectionately known as ‘the green yuri’ by fans—has officially announced an anime adaptation!
The exciting news was revealed alongside the release of the series’ third volume, marking a major milestone and a testament to its overwhelming popularity. With only three volumes out, the fact that it’s already being adapted into an anime speaks volumes about its impact.
Writer and illustrator Sumiko Arai shared the announcement on social media, writing in English:
“VOL.3 is out & anime is happening. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined a third book in bookstores, let alone an anime adaptation of this series. It’s so so touching and I’m so happy to be able to share the news with you guys :,) I hope it becomes something that’s loved worldwide by such a diverse & lovely audience like you guys. Thank you for always being a huge support, you made this happen!! So much love xx.”
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All began as a short story that Sumiko Arai posted on her X account from July to September 2021. It later became a serialized series on Pixiv Comic in April 2023 before Kadokawa Shoten picked it up for a print release.
Affectionately dubbed the ‘green yuri manga’ due to its striking green cover and distinctive green-tinted panels, the series has made a lasting impression on readers. Praised for its artwork, characters, and engaging plot progression, it won the 2023 Next Manga Award in the web manga category.
The story follows high schooler Aya Oosawa, who has a massive crush on a record store clerk she frequently visits. What she doesn’t realize is that the ‘cool and mysterious guy’ she admires is actually a ‘cool, mysterious, and slightly shy’ girl—Mitsuki Koga—who also happens to be her classmate. To make things even more awkward, Mitsuki sits right next to Aya in class, forced to listen as Aya gushes about her crush, all while sweating over how Aya will react when she inevitably discovers the truth. As the two bond over their shared love of rock music, their relationship slowly evolves from friendship into something more.
Yen Press licensed The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All, with the second volume dropping recently on February 18.
