In a world where majestic animals are often on the brink of extinction, stories of dedicated individuals striving to make a difference stand out as beacons of hope. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jan Stejskal, the Director of Communication and International Projects at Safari Park Dvůr Králové for BioRescue, an organization that encompasses some of the brightest minds on a mission to preserve the Northern White Rhino. In this interview, we explored the motivations, challenges, and collective efforts to save this species from disappearing entirely.
Getting to Know Jan
As we began our conversation, I learned that Jan’s passion for wildlife was sparked during his childhood. Although he considers himself social, Jan holds a personal affinity for the natural world—an interest he jokingly referred to as his “internal dork.” This passion naturally led him to his impactful role at BioRescue, where his dedication is seen in his work with the Northern White Rhinos.
The BioRescue Team
Jan was quick to share his admiration for the BioRescue team, an assembly of top experts each contributing unique skills and knowledge. From artificial reproduction pioneers like Thomas Hildebrandt to brilliant scientists like Cesare Galli and Katsuhiko Hayashi, BioRescue is equipped with some of the world’s most innovative minds. The team, which includes experts in artificial insemination, cloning, and veterinary care, collaborates to tackle the challenges of rhino conservation.
The Emotional Rollercoaster of Conservation
One of the striking elements of our discussion was Jan’s candid reflection on the emotional journey that accompanies conservation. He spoke of the highs and lows experienced over the course of the project, describing them as a “rollercoaster.” Despite setbacks, Jan emphasized the relentless determination of the team to turn research into success.
A Message to the World
Our conversation shifted towards the impact of the documentary, The Last Rhinos: A New Hope, highlighting the vital need for public understanding and support. Jan hopes audiences grasp the fragility of the rhino population and are inspired to act in support of conservation efforts—not just for the Northern White Rhinoceros, but for all endangered species.
Hope and Perseverance in Conservation
In our talk, Jan underscored a significant theme: hope. Whether facing apparent dead-ends in conservation or challenges in personal endeavors, the message is clear—commitment and sincerity in one’s mission can lead to unimagined successes. This tenacity, Jan believes, is a core value that could inspire young people globally.
Conclusion
As our conversation came to a close, Jan’s enthusiasm for the project and his gratitude for partners’ dedicated work were palpable. The intricate techniques being employed to save the Northern White Rhinos make it clear that their future lies in the hands of innovative science and tireless efforts of people like Jan and his team.
The Last Rhinos: A New Hope, the documentary chronicling their endeavors, stands as a testament to the incredible work of BioRescue and the collective hope to see future generations of this remarkable species thrive once more.
Stay tuned for the documentary release and join the conversation on how we can all play a role in wildlife conservation.
Thank you, Jan Stejskal, for sharing this inspiring journey with us. We look forward to seeing a brighter future for the Northern White Rhinos.
