On this week’s K-Pop Cosmos, hosts Freyja and Mark dive deep into the career of Younha the singer, songwriter, and musical genius affectionately known as the “Oricon Comet.”
Younha’s story begins in South Korea, where she was initially told she wasn’t “pretty enough” to become a star. Instead of giving up, she dropped out of high school at 16, moved to Japan, and began crafting her own destiny. By 2004, she debuted with Yubikiri and by the time she released Houkiboshi (the third ending theme for Bleach), Younha became the second South Korean artist after BoA to break into Japan’s Oricon Top 20.
Fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English, Younha isn’t just a vocalist she’s a composer, instrumentalist, and lyricist whose songs often blend deep introspection with emotional storytelling. She started playing piano at age five, mastered multiple instruments, and later became a member of Mensa with an IQ reportedly around 158.
In 2011, Younha sued her company, Lion Media, over an unfair contract and won, proving that talent and determination can outshine exploitation. That legal victory freed her to pursue music on her own terms, leading her to C9 Entertainment, where she continues to thrive creatively.
Younha recently announced her marriage to Lee Hyo-Jung, the creator of the popular Science Cookie YouTube channel. The ceremony took place in March 2025, marking a new chapter in her personal journey one that her fans, known as Y-Holics, celebrated worldwide.
From Winter Flower (featuring RM of BTS) to Sunfish and Point Nemo, Younha’s recent works show an artist unafraid to blend anime aesthetics, ballads, and introspective lyrics into one mesmerizing experience. Her 2024 album Growth Theory continues to captivate listeners, combining hauntingly beautiful melodies with themes of hope, loss, and rebirth.
As Freyja and Mark put it, Younha remains “a hidden gem not so hidden outside Korea, but still underappreciated at home.” Whether she’s performing live, crafting anime soundtracks, or collaborating with legends like Tablo and Epik High, Younha proves that true artistry isn’t about looks it’s about legacy.
“Cherish what you have while you have it.” – Younha, Point Nemo
