The Return of Gwen Stacy is a return to Gwenpool?!

I don’t really know how to describe this except that I’m equally as excited (For original Gwenpool returning) as I am scared (For original Gwen’s return)? It’s being revealed now that last week’s Return of Gwen Stacy hints that took the Marvel comics world by storm last week were both a joke and a quite literal interpretation. Because the original Gwen Stacy is making her triumphant return this May, but not in the way we all thought.

Instead, Gwen Stacy is back but going to become the brand new GWENPOOL, who in this version, is an evil ‘Doppelganger’ of Gwenpool that will need to be challenged by the original Gwendolyn “Gwen” Poole. All for a story by NYT bestselling writer Cavan Scott and artist Stefano Nesi this May.

Here’s the teaser by Marvel Comics that pretty much sums it up:

“Her death is the most heart-wrenching moment in comic book history. Her return will be the most outrageous!”

So yeah, apparently, Gwen Stacy is back darker and deadlier than before. As a result, Spider-Man, along with the original Gwenpool, need to team up to solve the mystery behind it before it’s too late. Marvel comics fans are… surprised, to say the least, as no one knows what this means. We talked about Gwen Stacy’s death in last week’s post. What I’m genuinely curious about, though, is the return of Gwenpool.

A popular character from years ago created by Christopher Hastings, Heather Antos, and Jordan D. White, Gwenpool has been quiet for the past few years. The ability to find printed comics of the character has actually gotten more difficult as years have passed. And despite being a favorite character, particularly among women comic readers, there was a good degree of retirement talks for Gwenpool before choosing to turn her into a mutant to stay relevant. Here’s what Marvel had to say in their synopsis of this upcoming new GWENPOOL:

GWENPOOL IS BACK AND MORE DANGEROUS THAN EVER!

Everyone’s favorite reality-twister’s life is changing. A grittier doppelganger is bringing her own brand of hyper-violent justice to a battle-strewn NYC! Who is this dark Gwenpool? And what does she want with the Amazing Spider-Man? Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark guest-star in a comic series that will shock you to your core!

And here’s Cavan Scott’s reasoning for resurrecting Gwen:

“What an absolute honor! To tear both Gwenpool AND Spider-Man’s worlds apart? Yes please! Gwen Stacy is back from the grave and deadlier than ever. Weapon-X style abilities? Check. A line in killer put-downs? You’ve got it. This is NOT the Gwen you remember. But just who is behind her miraculous resurrection? And what has happened to the original Gwenpool’s usually careful existence? Add Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark to the mix and you have the Marvel series of my dreams!”

Finally, here’s Scott’s excitement about working with artist Stefano Nesi, known for his acclaimed recent work on Batman:

“I couldn’t ask for a better partner than Stefano Nesi on art!” Scott continued. “Mega-violence has never been so much fun, each frenzied attack brought to dark, brooding life by Matt Milla’s blistering colors. Monsters, mayhem and murder await as Spider-Man and Kate learn that nothing—or no one—is sacred!”

There’ll also be variant covers by Chad Hardin, Greg Land, and Jeehyung Lee as seen below. In addition, Paco Medina’s foreboding promotional artwork of Gwen’s grave will also be available as a GWENPOOL #1 cover.
