The Upcoming DCU Project James Gunn Claims is ‘The Most Excited I’ve Ever Been’ About Anything

Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

The key factor that makes James Gunn the perfect choice for the co-head of DC Studios is that he is just as much a fan of these stories as anyone else. His love for characters such as Superman is clear from how enthusiastic he is about his next project.

Gunn is flying high with excitement about Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to his 2025 blockbuster Superman. The filmmaker shared how the upcoming DC movie started moving forward so soon after getting the greenlight in an interview for CBR.

I've been thinking about it for a long time, so when I went to write it, it got written quickly. And so it was really that it just came out good. And then it was like, ‘Why wait?’ Because it didn't seem like a Christmas movie. It seemed like a summer movie. And if I would have had to wait another year, it wouldn't work out. It was better to do it now. Listen, it's the most excited I've ever been about shooting anything, and I just can't wait to do it.

Considering the massive $616.7 million box office earnings and overwhelmingly positive response from both critics and audiences for Superman, it appears that fans are feeling the same way James Gunn is about Man of Tomorrow. This makes his willingness to shoot the project and bring it to the public as soon as possible unusually pleasant news.

Thoughts from the co-lead at DC Studios, Peter Safran, only reinforce the anticipation. CBR asked him if he was at all surprised that his producing partner is taking on Man of Tomorrow so eagerly, but it was not much of a shock to him.

No, no, no, not at all. Because he had such a great story to tell. A lot of people were surprised by how quickly… you know, Superman came out in 2025, and in ’27 we're going to have a sequel? That's really quick. And (Gunn) had not written a word of it, too. It wasn't even discussed. There were so many other projects that were sort of bandied about. But he had such a great story to tell. I knew that he was going to do it quickly.

If only James Gunn could shoot a movie faster than a speeding bullet, the world might already be flocking to the cineplex to catch Superman's next adventure in Man of Tomorrow.

In addition to writing the screenplay, Gunn will, once again, be at the helm for his follow-up to Superman, which he was initially only attached to pen before eventually accepting the directorial position. Man of Tomorrow starts filming in April 2026, which was revealed by Lex Luthor actor Nicholas Hoult when speaking to Variety.

The English actor is among the Man of Tomorrow cast members confirmed to reprise his villainous role opposite David Corenswet as Clark Kent, otherwise known as Kal-El. In fact, Gunn has shared that the Kryptonian and Lex, who is now collaborating with ARGUS following his arrest at the end of Superman, will be joining forces in the sequel, which sounds shocking, but has happened a number of times in the comics.

Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane is said to play an even more important role this time, but Gunn is keeping the details under the cape for now. Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl is also returning, as well as Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., and more. Milly Alcock is not confirmed, but expected to come back, following her Superman cameo as Kara Zor-El and solo adventure in 2026's Supergirl.

Man of Tomorrow is set to fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.
