The X-Men's Current Era Gather to Honor the Last - With One Exception

12 hours ago 5

The most extravagant event in mutant history is back, and this time around it is a decidedly somber evening.

A preview for X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1 from Marvel Comics finds Kamala Khan making the trip to New York City, all while mentally preparing herself for things to come. As it turns out, the Hellfire Gala has returned in the form of the Hellfire Vigil, held in the middle of Central Park as both an occasion to celebrate mutantkind and mourn the nation they lost. That being said, not everyone is all that interested in making an appearance, namely Scott Summers, who would rather stay behind at home base while the rest of his team show up in their absolute best.

The Hellfire Gala is, or rather was, one of the most illustrious events in the entire Marvel Universe. The first Hellfire Gala was held in 2021 and began in the pages of Marauders #21 by Gerry Duggan and Matteo Lolli. The event was created to celebrate all the achievements that mutantkind accomplished over the years, primarily the founding of the island nation of Krakoa, which stood as the independent home for mutants of every ilk for years before the war against Orchis rended it asunder.

In 2022 and 2023, the Hellfire Gala returned, cementing its place as an annual affair that fans could look forward to enjoying for the foreseeable future. That all changed in 2023, however, when the anti-mutant paramilitary organization known as Orchis launched an all-out assault on Krakoa and every other mutant in the solar system, during the Hellfire Gala itself, no less. While mutantkind was ultimately successful in turning the tide of battle against their would-be oppressors and bringing about an end to Orchis' endeavors, doing so cost them the homeland that they had fought so hard for so long to attain in the first place.
