This Forgotten Villain Just Unleashed a Classic Kaiju Threat Upon the Marvel Universe

17 hours ago 2

The very first supervillain that the Fantastic Four ever crossed paths with has just unleashed Godzilla upon the Marvel Universe.

In a preview for Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 (by Gerry Duggan, Javier Garrón, Jesus Aburtov, Andrew Dalhouse, and VC's Travis Lanham) from Marvel Comics, readers find Harvey Elder, better known as the Mole Man, seated atop his throne and surrounded by the Moloids he rules over. When one of them brings the Mole Man a spear made from an exceptionally rare form of Vibranium infused with Unstable Molecules, the longtime villain almost immediately makes a display of its powers. Unfortunately, this doesn't usher in a new era of glory for the Mole Man, but rather his defeat at the hands of the now rampaging Godzilla, whom he awoke.

Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 follows a long line of one-shots from Marvel Comics featuring the classic Toho kaiju mascot to be released this year. The first of these, Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 from writer Ryan North and artist John Romita Jr., set off what Marvel themselves described as "the battle of the century." What followed was five further issues charting Godzilla's latest journey through the Marvel Universe, with the titular kaiju facing off against the Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers, all before the overarching Godzilla vs. Marvel story came to a close in Godzilla vs. Thor #1 by writer Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder.

The official solicitation synopsis for Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 from Marvel Comics reads, "LOOK OUT NEW YORK! A previously dormant Godzilla has been angrily awoken and begun carving a path of annihilation as Earth's Mightiest Heroes band together to try and stop it's cataclysmic rampage! But when their combined efforts fail to slow the Bringer of Destruction, Earth's heroes are forced to go to extraordinary lengths to try and bring Godzilla down — including joining forces with Earths most devious villains! But will this be enough to stop Godzilla as it tears straight through the Marvel Universe into the Dark Dimension and other realms? Plus, how is the King of the Monsters connected to the mysterious metal, Vibranium, and what does this mean for Wakanda? In the face of an unstoppable force of nature, the Marvel Universe must come together like never before in this earth-shattering fight for Earth's survival. It's all hands on deck in the FIRST of FIVE electrifying chapters in this epic saga!"

Introduced in 1961's Fantastic Four #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Harvey Elder, aka the Mole Man, turned the torment and bullying he faced as a child into a reason to become a world-renowned explorer and adventurer. When his exploits uncovered the hidden world of Subterranea, Harvey installed himself as its leader and took up the mantle of the Mole Man. In the years since, the Mole Man has become an iconic if not always formidable foe for the Fantastic Four to face off against, and is currently slated to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as portrayed by Paul Walter Hauser in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps feature film.
