Tim Burton's infinitely iconic Batman is getting another sleeper sequel, and it is coming sooner than fans might think.

Fans will soon be able to revisit the world of Batman as envisioned by Tim Burton for the 1989 film courtesy of author John Jackson Miller's Batman: Revolution. Published by Penguin Random House, Batman: Revolution will be the second in Miller's line of follow-ups to Burton's classic Batman film series. Batman: Revolution is set to go on sale on October 21.

1989's Batman was directed by Burton from a screenplay by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren, and introduced the world to Michael Keaton's iconic iteration of The Dark Knight. Alongside Keaton, Batman starred Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon, Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent, Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jack Nicholson as Jack Napier, better known as the Joker. Batman was a massive success both critically and financially following its release in theaters, leading to a whole host of sequels, starting with 1992's Batman Returns, which marked Burton's final Batman film.

In 2024, Miller's Batman: Resurrection was released by Penguin Random House, offering readers an alternative take on the original Batman film series. Set between the events of Batman and Batman Returns, the novel introduces multiple fan-favorite DC Comics villains, including Clayface, Hugo Strange, and the Riddler, the latter of whom takes on a far different role than what fans are used to seeing. As of the time of writing, Batman: Resurrection holds a 4.06/5 approval rating via review aggregator GoodReads, as averaged across 355 user-submitted reviews of the novel.

DC Comics' Other Batman Sequel Series, Explained

In 2021, DC Comics published their own follow-up to Burton's Batman in the form of Batman '89. Written by Sam Hamm and illustrated by Joe Quinones, Batman '89 begins just shortly after the events of Batman Returns, and continues on in a completely different direction than that seen in the likes of Batman Forever. The original six-issue run of Batman '89 was lauded by readers, leading to the development of a second series entitled Batman '89: Echoes. While Batman '89 introduced entirely new versions of characters such as Scarecrow, it also provided some major payoffs for "new" characters such as Drake Winston, who steps into the role of Robin in an homage to early plans for Marlon Wayans to do the very same in Batman Forever while Burton and Keaton were still attached to the project.
