Top Comics to Buy for October 29, 2025: A gloriously weird fifth Wednesday selection

5 days ago 4

This week’s Top Comics to Buy for October 29 list covers one of the rare, gloriously weird fifth Wednesdays, which sees many publishers rolling out delayed and finale titles, along with eclectic sets of one shots. I’m a fine, because as a weekly comics sicko, fifth Wednesdays both break up the monotony and serve up a smaller week that gives me a chance to catch up on some runs that have gotten away from me.

And this week’s fifth Wednesday serves up some real gems. You can, as always, find my five favorite books of the week below, along with the usual set of other releases lists … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for October 29

Absolute Batman Annual 2025 #1
Writer/Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson, with James Harren and Meredith McClaren
Colorist: Mike Spicer, with Dave Stewart
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
Some of the biggest names in comics take a turn in the Absolute Universe! Daniel Warren Johnson and James Harren tell tales from Absolute Batman’s early days! How did Bruce acquire his batmobile? And what was it like for Black Mask’s party animals when Batman first hit the scene?
Why It’s Cool:
This is Absolute Batman’s first-ever annual, and it’s a DOOZY. I’ll get into the specifics of this book in tomorrow’s DC Round-Up column, but just know it’s a must-read. The thing I’ve liked most about the Absolute line is that it has recruited some of the most interesting artists in comics and let their art lead. This annual is no exception, with absolutely stunning work from Daniel Warren Johnson and James Harren. Get it.

$5.99

Batman and Robin: Year One #12
Co-Plotters: Mark Waid and Chris Samnee
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Chris Samnee
Colorist: Matheus Lopes
Letterer: Clayton Cowles with Chris Samnee
Publisher: DC Comics
Why It’s Cool:
Like all of Waid and Samnee’s superhero collaborations, this book has been a joy start to finish. This finale issue really has everything you’re looking for in a good, old school superhero adventure comic — fun banter between the leads, kinetic action sequences, and a satisfying conclusion to all the plot threads, ideas, and themes that have shaped this book during its excellent run. This one was a no-brainer for this week’s Top Comics to Buy for October 29. I’m just sad to see this series end, but here’s hoping Waid and Samnee already have another DC superhero story cooking.
Price:
$3.99

Blink and You’ll Miss It #3
Writers: Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan
Artist: Keith Browning
Colorist: Brad Simpson
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
The genre-defying new saga continues! Having slipped back in time to her adolescence, Melody is finally able to reconnect with Jesse through revisiting their first meeting. Together, the pair race to uncover the terrible truth that lies beneath Perennial Harbor before it tears them apart once and for all.
Why It’s Cool:
This book is a fever dream blast of time travel and small town horror and a coming of age tale, all rendered gorgeously by the team of Keith Browning and Brad Simpson. Regular readers of this column know I really appreciate monthly books that feel singular, and this is certainly that, from the jerky pace of revelation in the narrative to the bold panel layouts.

$4.99

Godzilla vs America: Godzilla vs Kansas City #1 (one-shot)
Writers: Buster Moody, Freddie E. Williams II, Kyle Strahm, Jake Smith, Baldemar Rivas
Artists, Inkers, Colorists: Buster Moody, Ludwig Olimbo, Andrew Dalhouse, Jake Smith, Valentina Pinto, Baldemar Rivas, Heather Breckel
Letterer: Sandy Tanaka
Publisher: IDW Publishing
You may have thought your city was too small to attract a kaiju… well, you shouldn’t have stuffed it so full of incredible comics creators. At this point, there’s nothing left to do but enjoy it. So, join a star-studded group of Kansas City–based comics creators as Godzilla smashes its smallest city yet!
Why It’s Cool:
All of these Godzilla vs. America books have just been a total joy. It’s especially fun in this issue watching a kaiju romp through a less obvious American city, which has the added effect of feeling like a trip through some local lore and obsessions. I had a blast with this one, and here’s hoping Godzilla is just always smashing through American cities, from Seattle to Peoria. Or wherever Godzilla might fancy.

$7.99

Moonshine Bigfoot #4
Writers: Mike Marlow and Zach Howard
Pencils: Steve Ellis
Inker: Zach Howard
Colorist: Nelson Daniel
Letterer and Designer: Thompson Knox
Publisher: Image Comics – Syzygy Publishing
Uncle Pineapple becomes a bargaining chip while Big Level, with their newly repaired and ornery Cyborg Sheriff, upends Buzzard County searching for Moonshine. Meanwhile, Bigfoot, healed up from the beating of his life, acquires a surprising new set of wheels to tear up the roads. Can Moonshine Bigfoot and his friends come together to finally defeat Big Level?
Why It’s Cool:
Regular readers of this space probably know that I like comics that are self-aware and absurdist, and, as its name implies, Moonshine Bigfoot has certainly been that. It’s just been a blast of over-the-top storytelling with a wink, the type that is best done in comics, and I’ve loved it.
