Toxic Masculinity Tuesday: ‘Avengement’ (2019)

4 days ago 7

Promise made, promise kept. I love when TMT readers suggest movies for me to watch, and I have to say, Avengement has been the best. I thought I had seen most, if not all, Scott Adkin’s movies but this gem slipped through the cracks.

Expecting a typical brutal slugfest, I was pleasantly surprised by Scott’s more dramatic take as he becomes an Avenger to right a terrible wrong. Joshua Hunt is right; this should have been Scott Adkins’ Copland, or Bronson, where an action star displays his acting chops with a more dramatic movie.

But don’t let that fool you. The brutal action is still there and this is why you must fight your toxic masculinity with more toxic masculinity by watching Avengement!

Check out the trailer!

Plot:

A man walks into a bar. His face is terribly scarred, and he sports a grill of intimidating metal teeth as he sits and listens. Scott Adkins is Cain Burgess, a naïve, low-level criminal and brother of loan shark Lincoln. Cain wants to go straight with a legitimate business and asks his brother for a loan, who scoffs at the bad investment.  Lincoln convinces Caine to do a job for him in return for the money. This is how Cain ends up in the notorious HMP Belmarsh prison.

And this is where Scott Adkins flexes his acting chops. Cain is indeed naïve and is true of heart. When he is on the job, he is actually caught because someone got hurt by a freak accident, and he stopped long enough to get arrested. Cain has faith in his brother, and refuses to cooperate even after the police explain how Lincoln had used him for a phony scam to squeeze more money from his victims.

Cain is instantly attacked in prison and it’s apparent these are no normal brawls. Cain is a trained fighter, but the sheer number of attackers is overwhelming, and he is pushed to the limit to defend himself. It’s heartbreaking to watch Cain endure, pleading when his mother comes to visit, asking why Lincoln has not visited or got him released. Even when his mother tells him that his brother is not a good man, Cain continues to put his faith in him.

As the attacks persist and become more violent, Cain becomes even more resolute. No matter what, he refuses to let the prison break him and trains like a mad man, slowly turning into an entirely different person. Things get worse for Cain, as he is blamed for the violence, and his parole is denied year after year.

Scott Adkins puts on a powerful performance as Cain transforms into the man we saw walking in the bar. We see a good man turned into something ugly to survive as Cain realizes there is only one man who could fund the attacks against him.

Why You Should Watch

I am being vague on purpose because I truly wish everyone reading this watches Avengement right after. I hate using campy phrases like tour de force, but Scott Adkin puts on an epic performance that should get more attention. Cain Burgess is not a vigilant, but an Avenger. His sole purpose to avenge the wrong done to him and he will pay that price at any cost.

The action in Avengement is vicious as every battle Cain endures is a fight to the death. Each near death just makes Cain stronger, and you can’t help but root for him even while he sinks into the abyss of anger and darkness.
