Toxic Masculinity Tuesday: Chuck Norris in ‘Silent Rage’ (1982)

6 days ago 6

We’re back! Apologies for the gap in filling you readers with a dose of toxic masculinity, but I’ve been busy editing not one, but two books! The first book is The Norikumiin, which should be out hopefully in a month! Can’t wait for you guys to read it!

But we’re here to consume toxicity, and since we’re approaching Halloween -and I prepare to dress as Indiana Jones for the 17th time for our church Trunk or Treat- how about a Chuck Norris classic that happens to feature one of the scariest villains I ever witnessed as a kid?

Grab your gun and cowboy boots as we consume the very toxic movie, Silent Rage!

Silent Rage • 1982 • Theatrical Trailer

Plot:

Silent Rage begins with a fairly innocuous scene. John Kirby (Brian Libby) is at a home that is raucous and noisy with a mom yelling at two rowdy kids. John is struggling with the mom’s shrill voice and the screaming, and he calls his doctor. Struggling to take his meds, John tells his doctor he’s not going to make it before he drops the phone.

Those are the only words spoken by John Kirby as he silently walks outside and grabs an ax. With no emotion, Jack stalks the shrill mother whose screams alert the father. John easily kills him, before he chops down a door where the mother is trying to escape through a window. A passing mailman sees her struggles and calls the police, but they are too late to save the mother, as John kills her with a satisfied grin on his face.

That’s when Sherriff Dan Steven’s (Chuck Norris) arrives. Dan clears the house but is ambushed by the silent John Kirby, who is incredibly strong and relentless.

After a lengthy fight where John almost kills Dan, he is finally subdued and put inside the back of a squad car.

John’s doctor, Tom Halman (Ron Silver), arrives and begins to explain John’s psychosis when a crazed John breaks his cuffs and kicks out the police door!

As he attacks the police, the cops tap into their toxicity and absolutely light him up with shades of Alex Murphy coming to mind.

And like Murphy, despite the many gunshot wounds, John Kirby is still alive. Dr. Halman transfers John to his hospital, where he and his colleagues attempt to save John’s life.

Hooked on monitors, John is slowly dying. Dr. Halman and his colleague, Dr. Spires, are working on an experimental drug that heals wounds and Spires convinces Halman to use the serum on John Kirby. They watch as John responds to the serum, his vital growing stronger. Dr. Halman grows a conscious and pleads with Spires to end the experiment. Spires finally agrees.

Dan had followed the doctor there to check on John’s condition and the doctor informs him that John is stabilized but brain-dead.  This is where Dan runs into an old flame named Alison who happens to be Dr. Halman’s sister. There is a whole B-plot about them rekindling their romance, but who cares!

Dr. Halman tells Dan John is deceased, but he goes back to the body to find that Spires had continued with the experiment. John is alive. Spires marvels as he shows Dr. Halman the results, such as John’s new ability to self-heal. Dr. Halman is amazed as well as he watches a scalpel cut heal on John’s chest.

But Halman sees abnormalities in John’s brain images and says John is a psychopath who is better off dead. This is when we see John’s eyes open and he’s heard every word.

Why You Should Watch:

Dan is rather oblivious as the danger grows around him. Most of Dan’s time is spent running off a biker gang that tries to roll in and destroy his town. In usual Chuck Norris fashion, you get an excellent bar fight where he takes on the entire gang all by himself. He is also busy winning Alison back. While Dan gets the girl, John Kirby is unleashed.

And honestly, this movie is about John Kirby. With his new power and madness, he is one of the scariest villains you’ve never  heard of. And he never says a word. Brian Libby’s tall, lengthy frame, and crazed eyes, emotes so much rage that my friend Henry and I were terrified while watching Silent Rage as children.

After overhearing the doctor, John stalks Dr. Halman and his wife in a very eerie scene. There is background ground music as you watch the doctor go about his night at home oblivious to the monster lurking behind him. Dr Halman puts up a struggle but is useless as his experiment has made John Kirby indestructible. Things get worse when Halman’s wife gets home and John seems to do everything in his power to scare her to death just by his creepy presence.

I’ll leave it there as Silent Rage is a movie that should be watched this Halloween. But be warned, this is not a kids’ movie. Well, it was for Gen X kids who were used to such things, but there are gruesome kills and nudity, so be ready to cover your kids’ eyes for a few seconds.
