Disney and Pixar yesterday released the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5, the sequel that brings Tom Hanks and Tim Allen back to the roles of Woody and Buzz yet again. The duo will share the screen, but most fans have wondered exactly how that will work out — and the new trailer doesn’t have any clues.
For those who have forgotten, Toy Story 4 ended with Woody getting an unexpected happy ending by running off with Bo Peep, striking out on his own without a kid to love him. Fans of the franchise have been mixed on that decision, since Woody of all characters has always been loyal to the human characters, but since that is how the movie ended, fans have wondered what circumstance brings him back to the playroom with Buzz and the rest.
The trailer doesn’t provide any hints there. In it, Bonnie gets a “Lilypad,” a children’s tablet, the arrival of which is treated like a horror movie reveal complete with a suggestion that “the age of toys is over.” After a logo reveal, there’s a quick cut to Buzz and Woody — but absolutely nothing to cover what has been going on in the time since Toy Story 4.
Bonnie does not appear to have grown up much, suggesting that the quasi-real-time aging that Andy did before giving up his toys won’t be part of the story just yet. Instead of aging out of toys, the challenge here will be keeping her attention in the face of modern day technology, which is the premise that has been hinted at since Toy Story 5 was first announced.
Meanwhile, it seems likely Bonnie will have a younger sibling playing a role in the movie as well. Late night legend Conan O’Brien will join the film’s cast in the role of Smarty Pants, an electronic potty-training toy. He will join a cast that includes Hanks, Allen, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Wallace Shawn, Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Tony Hale, and Anna Faris as Lilypad.
The film is directed by Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote the first four Toy Story movies but has never directed one. Stanton has, however, directed some of Pixar’s most beloved movies, including Wall-E and Finding Nemo.
Toy Story 5 is set to arrive in theaters on June 19, 2026.
