Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

No longer is Aquaman seen as the Justice League's weak link, since Jason Momoa delivered the water-based superhero's definitive portrayal in the DC Extended Universe. However, fans are excited to see what could become the actor's definitive comic book character portrayal when he debuts as Lobo.

Jason Momoa is transitioning to James Gunn's DC Universe by starring in Supergirl as Lobo, which was confirmed in Dec. 2024. However, the actor sensed that he was destined for the character much earlier than that.

While doing press for the DCEU's final chapter, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, alongside co-star Patrick Wilson in 2023, Momoa revealed that he assumed he was joining the shared universe as Lobo in the first place. In fact, as he explains in a video shared on social media by Fandango, he was shocked to discover that he had been selected to play Arthur Curry instead.

Momoa, who also plays Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot, details in the clip that he was auditioning for the former half of the titular duo in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, without expecting to be chosen anyway. When Ben Affleck was cast as Bruce Wayne, Momoa assumed that he would be coming in to play the only character who can beat both the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel (Henry Cavill), Lobo, before receiving the news that he was Aquaman.

He also recalls how Lobo was his favorite comic book character when he was an avid collector, as well as his dream acting role. He ends the clip by, essentially, foretelling his DCU prophecy.

I mean, listen, if they call me and ask me to play him, it’s a ‘F— yeah.’

Lobo is actually the fifth comic book character Momoa has added to his resume. Before he was cast as Aquaman, he played the title role of the 2011 adaptation of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian, who was previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and on the small screen by Ralf Möller.

The following year, he starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in the action thriller Bullet to the Head, which is based on the French graphic novel Du plomb dans la tête written by Matz and illustrated by Colin Wilson. Also, following his DCEU induction, Momoa starred in Slumberland, Netflix's adaptation of Winsor McCay's early 20th-century comic strip, as a loose reinterpretation of the character Flip.

Who Is Lobo In DC Comics?

Rumors of Jason Momoa's transition from playing Aquaman to playing Lobo surfaced even before the DCEU was officially defunct. Fans were quick to agree that the actor was a perfect choice for the role, and it is clear to see why just by looking at the character.

Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo made his DC Comics debut in Omega Men #3 in June 1983. Originally depicted as a villain, the extra-terrestrial being from the planet Czarnia was revived as an anti-heroic, intergalactic bounty hunter when he received his own series in the 1990s.

There was actually a time when DC attempted to use Lobo as a parody of popular gritty characters like Wolverine and The Punisher, similar to how Deadpool was initially developed by Marvel to poke fun at Deathstroke. However, fans came to earnestly and enthusiastically enjoy his grim nature, resulting in his current reputation.

In other media, Lobo has been voiced by the likes of Emmy winner Brad Garrett, accomplished voice actor John DiMaggio and even SpongeBob SquarePants star Tom Kenny in animated adaptations. Momoa is bringing him to life on the big screen for the first time in Supergirl, but he was previously portrayed in live-action by Emmett J. Scanlan in the Syfy original Superman prequel series, Krypton.

Supergirl is set to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.
