The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #12, on sale December 10 from Marvel Comics.
The most powerful mutant in the Ultimate Universe is finally free to start burning the Maker's world to the ground.
After dropping in on the same villains responsible for turning him into the dreaded Winter Soldier, the titular antihero of Ultimate Wolverine #12 (by Chris Condon, Alessandro Cappuccio, Bryan Valenza, and VC's Cory Petit) finds himself staring down the combined might of Illyana and Piotr Rasputin. Fortunately for him, even the mighty Colossus' strength pales in comparison to the fury of the Phoenix, and he is just the first of many who will feel her flames from the inside out.

The official solicit synopsis for Wolverine #12 from Marvel Comics reads, "WOLVERINE'S ATTACK ON THE EURASIAN CAPITAL! After the devastation in ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #11, Wolverine is out for vengeance! And he's taking on the whole of the Eurasian Republic in this big, bad and bloody climactic issue... who will be left standing?"
The Jean Grey of the Ultimate Universe is a far cry from the mutant hero Marvel fans have gotten to know over the past six decades. Thanks to the Maker's manipulations of her world, this Jean Grey never got the chance to be a superhero, instead being abducted, tortured, and effectively turned into a living signal array for the Eurasian Republic lorded over by the likes of Illyana and Piotr Rasputin.
Dubbed the Phoenix Specimen, the Jean Grey of the Ultimate Universe was vital to the Eurasian Republic's worst experiments, including the creation of the Winter Soldier. Through Jean's vast psychic abilities, the Eurasian Republic could control and command the Winter Soldier with relative ease, at least up until their hold over him was broken.
Setting Jean free might be the biggest thing that the Ultimate Wolverine has done so far, but things are only going to get more explosive as the series and the rest of the Ultimate Universe approaches its Ultimate Endgame. While most other ongoing Ultimate titles are set to conclude with their 24th issues, the release of Ultimate Wolverine #16 in April will mark the final issue of the series.
Back in October, following the announcement of the end of the Ultimate line, The Ultimates writer Deniz Camp, who took over as co-architect of the Ultimate Universe after Jonathan Hickman's exit, discussed what fans can expect from its grand finale. "It's gonna be definitive, it's going to be big. It's going to be emotional, there's going to be death... It's just wild."
Head of Marvel Comics and Franchise Dan Buckley added, "You'll be able to take this journey—the beginning, middle, and end—and digest it for years to come and pass it on to others."
Ultimate Wolverine #12 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
