Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum opens up about the disappointing development status of the long-awaited sequel series.

During an appearance at Comic Con Liverpool alongside fellow Smalliville star Tom Welling, Rosenbaum was asked about whether any prospective continuations of the series could be considered realistic. "We did some artwork and Al [Gough] and Miles [Miller], who created Smallville," Rosenbaum replied. "They're attached. And Tom [Welling] and I wanna do it, but it's gotta be the right time, when you pitch."

There was more to add about the Smallville animated spin-off's production. "And, you know, you have to make sure that the studio is wanting to do something like that right now," Rosenbaum continued. "So, we wanna get it made, and we plan to use all these guys [the Smallville cast members present] when we get it made. But we don't know when. We don't know when, but it's a work in progress."

The original Smallville premiered on The WB back in 2001 and stayed with the network (now The CW) throughout the entirety of its ten-season, 217-episode run. Smallville starred Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent who is still living and attending high school in Smallville long before becoming Superman. The series' star-studded ensemble cast also included Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, Annette O'Toole as Martha Kent, John Schneider as Jonathan Kent, and John Glover as Lionel Luthor.

How Smallville Continued on After the Series Ended

Although the original live-action Smallville series ended after ten seasons on television, DC Comics continued the story with the release of the Smallville Season Eleven limited series, which ran up through 2014. Unfortunately, this is largely the only continuation of the Smallville story that fans have received since the original series came to an end, apart from a handful of cameos from its leading cast members in various Arrowverse shows.

Welling himself discussed the reality of making a Smallville sequel series come to life on the small screen, stating, "I'll tell you where it's at: We need Warner Brothers and DC to let us do it. We've got Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar,] who are very busy doing a TV show called Wednesday. But they created Smallville, they want to write it. We just need to go ahead from DC and Warner Brothers... All the actors want to do the voices of the characters — we're all in. We just need them to let us use the property."

Smallville is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
