“Darby O’Gill And The Little People”

Lord Fitzpatrick has arrived in the village of Rathcullen to acclimate his new caretaker to the duties in which he will be employed. As you see, over the past few years the Fitzpatrick Estate has fallen into a bit of disrepair. Tis not due to neglect nor maliciousness, mind you, as the current keeper was a respectful god-fearing man. The fact was, dear old Darby O’Gill had reached his twilight years and the duties required of him had become too much for him to handle.  

These days, his daughter Katie had begun helping to maintain the property, while her father spent time at the pub recounting his adventures with the little people. Old Darby was a master storyteller. His encounters with Brian Connors, King of the Leprechauns, had gained legendary status with the locals. What the fine people of Rathcullen didn’t know was just how true Darby’s tales were to be exact. For Leprechauns are real, even if you wish not to believe in them. 

So watch where you toss out that old chamber pot. And remember, always bow to dustdevils, for they may be Leprechauns in disguise. Listen to Darby O’Gill. There may be a pot of gold in your future.

Review

Thankfully, my mother had exposed me to several of her favorite movies from her childhood. Darby O’Gill and the Little People is one such classic. I will say up front that this is still my favorite Walt Disney movie of all time. So, when I found this comic book adaptation in a local antiques store, I was ecstatic. 

Four Colors II (Dell Comics) has reproduced the core of the movie scene by scene; however, it has been heavily edited for page space. There is a lot of content missing here which made the movie such a magical production. For those who have not seen the original movie, I would suggest watching it before reading this Dell adaptation. 

I was a bit disappointed in some of the artwork, as several of the panels are very murky and obscured by the colors. I realized some of the scenes are at night, but the colorist should have done a better job of highlighting artist Alex Toth’s work. I will have to give the Darby O’Gill and the Little People comic book a weak three out of five stars.
