Talk about a new Alien vs. Predator movie has been circulating on social media for months, especially since the first trailer for Predator: Badlands hinted at a connection to Ridley Scott’s famous Alien series. Dan Trachtenberg recently explained how the link between the two franchises developed in his latest film. He also gave the clearest sign so far that a crossover movie could happen in the future.
At the San Diego Comic-Con, Trachtenberg shared several details and surprises. He revealed a new ending for the animated series Predator: Killer of Killers. This featured the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover to the Predator franchise. He also discussed how the Predator and Alien franchises might join as one.
Trachtenberg said, “After getting to the Predator as the protagonist, the next thing was a Predator and a robot. There will be a really human story, but it’s about a Predator and a robot. And then I thought, I know someone who makes robots. So that’s how Yutani have evolved, but then there’s these two even more cool ideas. But I think sometimes people who are dabbling in cinematic universes, there’s a seduction to grab all the action figures and squish them together. I really didn’t want to do that, I wanted to make sure if we ever do anything like that it would be more elegant.”
Fans have wanted a director who understands what makes a good Predator movie for many years. In 2022, Dan Trachtenberg impressed many with Prey, a Predator prequel that met and in some ways improved on the original 1987 film, at least to many fans.
Trachtenberg is believed to be working on a sequel to Prey and a new installment of Killer of Killers. The latter will likely include a bigger return for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch, in animated form. He also appears to be preparing a crossover with the Alien series. Predator: Badlands features the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, the company responsible for the androids in the Alien saga.
Though nothing is confirmed, Trachtenberg is clearly considering the idea. Fans are also interested. Past Alien vs. Predator movies disappointed many viewers. If anyone can make a successful crossover, it seems to be Trachtenberg. Meanwhile, the Alien series is also seeing a resurgence. The success of Alien: Romulus is set to be followed by Alien: Earth, the first Alien TV show which sadly seems to be focused on themes like anti-capitalism and global warming. Not a good sign.
The future direction of these franchises still remains unknown, but if they can successfully pull off any high-quality Alien and Predator content, those stories could last for years.
