The creators behind Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires discuss why the titular hero's costume changed so drastically during development.

During a recent appearance on CBR Presents during San Diego Comic-Con, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires director Juan Meza-León opened up about the evolution of the film's Dark Knight over the course of its years-long development period. When asked to touch on what the Aztec Batman himself was able to become due to the constraints of the film's period-specific setting, Meza-León said, "That was a close collaboration with the character designer... We just went back-and-forth, ping-ponging ideas."

The Spawn Universe is celebrating a massive milestone with an epic story and some of the hottest covers of the past decade.

"First of all, before we started to create the outfit or the armor, we wanted to first find out who's underneath the armor. Who's the man or the person under, or, you know, inside the armor," Meza-León continued. "Because Batman is human first of all, you know. So let's build the human first and from there build the suit around it... So the design was based [on] a lot of actual armor from the Spanish as well as trying to emulate the warrior outfits from the Aztec warriors like the Jaguar Warriors, the Eagle Warriors. And so they had these helmets that represent the animal, the spirit that they are representing. So we wanted him to have a similar idea, but with the bat god, you know to represent Tinakan. And that was the key element that led us into creating the Batman story."

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires Has A Release Date

Announced all the way back in 2022, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires) follows the young Aztec warrior Yohualli Coatl, voiced by Horacio García Rojas, whose life is thrown into chaos with the arrival of Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés, who murders Yohualli's father. This drives Yohualli to take up the mantle of Batman and fight back against his would-be oppressors. Unfortunately for him, the Hernán Cortés of this world is fated to play the part of Two-Face after being maimed, while an Aztec priest takes up the mantel of Yoka, or Joker, after hearing the call of Huitzilopochtli and being driven to wanton human sacrifice by the voices in his head.

While fans have been waiting for the release of Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires for years, they can finally see it when it arrives in theaters in Mexico on Sept.18 before it makes its streaming debut on HBO Max. Better yet, fans have already been given hopes for a sequel. When asked if there might be other stories told in this specific version of the DC Universe, Meza-León responded, "We hope so. The whole world was created that expands this alternate reality of the universe, not only for the Mesoamerican culture, but also for the DC Universe. We have a whole world where we can explore more DC characters."
