Star Trek fans have a reason to head back to the theater this fall. Regal Cinemas will screen a new documentary celebrating the franchise’s 60th anniversary, and William Shatner is leading the charge as executive producer. The film, titled The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and the World, hits Regal locations for a limited run this October. It leans hard on the legacy of Star Trek: The Original Series, which premiered on NBC in 1966 and ran for three seasons before cancellation. Production values were rough by today’s standards, yet the show endures because of its social commentary and timeless themes. Shatner teams with director and writer Mark A. Altman, who previously produced 50 Years of Star Trek in 2016. The documentary features exclusive interviews and never-before-seen archival material to reframe how audiences view the original run. Shatner will appear at select screenings for post-film Q&A panels alongside original co-stars George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, and Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov.
