For this issue of YAP, we get to know the characters Wiccan and Speed. I’m not sure why they didn’t warrant their own issues? Maybe it’s because the two characters are brothers, both children of Scarlet Witch, and are getting curious about their mother.

Wanda has been missing since M-Day, but they go to look for her in places that mattered most in her history, eventually arriving at the house she shared with Vision in New Jersey. There, they find Master Pandemonium waiting for them. Those who know the detailed and complicated history of Scarlet Witch know that Master P was a big part of her “fake children” plotline–and he immediately recognizes Speed and Wiccan.

After a bit of unnecessary conflict, Master Pandemonium simply talks to the boys and tells them not to worry about their mother and instead focus on the present–and embrace it.
When I first saw Pandemonium in this comic I was not thrilled. I have never found him to be particularly interesting or imaginative, and there is still so much about the “Scarlet Witch Twins” story that makes no sense to me. But the use of him here is excellent. I particularly like that he knows the truth (or at least a version of it) but instead of sharing it with the twins, he simply advised them to move on. I like this for two reasons: Not every secret known to a character has to be revealed, and this secret is kept for reasons that are unclear even to the reader–contributing to the mystery behind these two Young Avengers. And also I like it because their past, their destruction by Mephisto, and then their rebirth to separate sets of parents will NEVER make sense so…Why try? Just embrace it!
Well done.
