The possibilities in Minecraft are endless. You can almost do anything you want as long as you have the materials. This open-ended nature is what makes the game so appealing to so many. It also opens up a lot of storytelling potential, which has seen it branch out into countless YouTube videos, official novels, a film, and even graphic novels.
Do you have a Minecraft-obsessed person in your life? Then they’ll love the Minecraft graphic novels and manga. They’re the perfect way to get a fix away from the screen.
This guide details everything you need to know about the Minecraft graphic novels and manga. What comics are available, suggestions on where to start reading, and where to find them are all included so you can dive into the pages of these stories.
Happy reading!
Which graphic novels and manga will this guide cover?
There are a lot of Minecraft comics out there. However, not all of them are officially licensed by Mojang Studios. Many self-proclaimed unofficial comics exist, created by fans and either drawn in a style mimicking the Minecraft aesthetic or using the game to create the art. With everything made by fans, the quality varies a lot. Additionally, graphic novels like Frigiel & Fluffy – which are based on a French-language Minecraft YouTube channel – add another layer of adaptation to the mix.
It’s too hard to keep track of the unofficial material. Due to this, this guide will focus on the officially licensed comics and manga. This allows me to recommend graphic novels/manga that are authorised by Mojang Studios, have a level of quality control, and are widely available.
Who publishes Minecraft graphic novels/manga?
Two publishers have the rights to publish Minecraft comic material. Dark Horse Comics has the rights to original graphic novels – publishing at least two per year. The other is Viz Media, which published the English-language version of the Minecraft manga.
Both publishers have acquired the rights from Mojang Studios, making their graphic novels/manga official. Unless stated otherwise, anything else Minecraft-related is unofficial.
Are Minecraft graphic novels/manga suitable for younger readers?
Yes! The graphic novels/manga published by Dark Horse and Viz Media are made with younger readers (ages 7-10) in mind. They’re adventure stories that feature themes that will appeal to kids while featuring minimal violence and scares. If you’re okay with the content in Minecraft games, then you won’t have an issue with the graphic novels or manga series.
Where to start reading
The Minecraft graphic novels and manga are (mostly) standalone. The stories are self-contained, even if they may feature recurring characters, and are readable if you haven’t read previous books in a subseries. As a result, readers should be able to pick up any Minecraft graphic novel and enjoy it.
This makes where to start more open-ended. My recommendation: begin with the graphic novel(s) that have the most appealing premise or are easily available to read.
Minecraft graphic novels
Dark Horse Comics has published many Minecraft graphic novels since 2019. The publisher has used my writers and artists to tell stories, some of them through one-off tales, while others are given the space to stretch out their trilogy-based subseries.
Each graphic novel is 88 pages long – a good length for young readers to read in one sitting.
