Zack Snyder's latest cryptic social media post is giving Snyderverse fans another reason to speculate on the future of their favorite franchise.

In an Instagram post, Snyder shared an image of Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley in character as Walter Kovacs, better known as Rorschach, standing alongside a sign reading "The end is nigh." While some have taken this as a mere indication that Snyder is a massive fan of Watchmen (which would make sense considering he directed the film), others have taken it as a quiet nod to the impending end of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU and a potential return of the Snyderverse.

Krysten Ritter's hotly anticipated return as Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again has officially been explained, and it makes perfect sense.

The Snyderverse as it is known by fans is largely comprised of the interconnected features from the original DC Extended Universe (DCEU) line of films, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. Defined by its grim and gritty takes on classic DC Comics characters, the Snyderverse has been so adored by fans that numerous online campaigns have been launched in an effort to salvage the director's vision for the DCEU. Perhaps the most successful of these efforts resulted in the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021, an extended, director's cut version of the 2017 film.

Among the most vocal of those in favor of trading in Gunn and Safran's DCU for its predecessor is former Batman writer Chuck Dixon, who previously stated that Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet "failed no matter how you look at it," despite the film quickly approaching the $150 million mark in terms of profit after grossing more than $616 million at the global box office. "But he failed to even break even on a Superman movie. When you have all the good wishes that come with the world’s most famous superhero on your side and fail to make a profit it’s bad," Diixon added.

Despite the notion that the DCU is floundering under Gunn and Safran's leadership, the franchise continues eyeing new ways to expand, with Superman itself slated to receive both a follow-up feature film in the form of Man of Tomorrow and a streaming series spin-off revolving around the lives of Daily Planet employees such as Skyler Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen. The series is being executive produced by Gunn and Safran, while American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda are slated to write, direct, and serve as showrunners on the Superman spin-off.

Regarding what audiences can expect from Man of Tomorrow when it makes its way into theaters in 2027, early reports have pointed towards the malevolent Brainiac serving as its lead villain. Man of Tomorrow will also heavily feature returning DCU star Frank Grillo in the role of Rick Flag Sr., who Grillo previously promised "is a big part of the sequel's story." Grillo made his debut as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos before reprising the role in Season 2 of Peacemaker.

DCEU movies are available to stream on HBO Max.
