In a world where Sony Playstation has changed everything by declaring their decision to end creation of all physical video game media, and subsequently cowered into hiding after doing it, a new rumor has sprouted on social media regarding Marvel Comics and DC Comics that oddly (as far as timing goes) piggybacks off of that fallout and outrage.
It's a report that claims the Big Two are on the verge of doing the unthinkable after nearly 100 years of delivering their product directly into the hands of readers and consumers and, if true, it would rival, if not outright overtake, Sony's decision as one of the most unpopular and tone-deaf business moves of all-time.
Controversial Marvel Comics Rumor Makes Wild Claim
First, we begin with the rumor/report itself. It comes from Fandom Pulse, a well-known but often heavily criticized social media outlet that, on Monday, July 6, posted a bombshell report on X (formerly known as Twitter) that sent the comic book world into utter chaos.
The report reads, verbatim: "The source: 'Marvel will be phasing out their publishing to Webtoon by 2030, give or take.' That's the word I heard. DC was also headed that direction, but are going all in on Absolute Batman. Cosmic Book News is separately hearing the same from its own insider — that Disney is 'less interested in publishing' and is looking to license out Marvel Comics rather than produce it in-house."
Seemingly confirming the accuracy of the report was legendary Marvel Comics creator Rob Liefeld, who offered up only two words after seeing it: "Believe it."
Fans of both Marvel Comics and DC Comics immediately sprung into action — some in an outright panic, declaring "this will absolutely kill everything" and that "this has to be the worst f--king idea ever???", while others felt their anxiety (but not their rage towards the Fandom Pulse) at ease when seeing other well-known comic book creators seemingly shoot down the report as nothing more than an attempt at grifting for engagement revenue.
Marvel Rumor Gets Annihilated by Skeptical Creators, Fans
"Jeez, right-wing comic sites just completely making stuff up now, absolutely no accountability," Deniz Camp, writer of Marvel's The Ultimates Universe and Absolute Martian Manhunter for DC Comics, wrote in a separate post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Camp was joined by others who share the same sentiment — claiming Fandom Pulse has a clear agenda and an ax to grind that many believe have been evident for years now — with fans and fan sites replying to the original, controversial report in kind with Camp's take.
"I need y’all to start checking the sources on these rumors and 'insiders', cause no way y'all are getting got by grifters making sh-t up in 2026." said one fan, with a separate post from another offering up a similar allegation.
"Before believing this, JDA/Fandom Pulse (same guy) also claimed two years ago that his 'DC insider' said that Absolute Superman was going to be pansexual," they wrote. "We're 20 issues into that series and this has never happened. This guy lies as a way to sell his own AI-written books."
Would Marvel Comics, DC Comics Ever Pull a 'Sony'?
Adding to all of this are huge fan sites such as @SiteJamesons on X (formerly known as Twitter), with more than 110,000 followers, that took aim at the credibility of the source of the report, and the alleged sources that fed it.
"I've seen well-meaning people sharing this news here throughout the day, with a tone of concern, so I think a warning is in order: Fandom Pulse and Cosmic Book News are conservative pages that thrive on creating panic and fueling intolerance," they wrote. "They have no commitment to serious journalism. Don't believe this nonsense. You only need two functioning neurons to realize that this makes absolutely no sense."
They continued: "I know that with the growing hate toward Marvel Comics, fueled by terrible editorial decisions, it's easy to always think the worst and get carried away by delusions like this. But don't let yourselves be manipulated by the conservative crowd."
Do you believe there's a version of Earth in which Marvel Comics and DC Comics would turn their backs on readers by scuttling production of all physical copies, like Sony has? Even in the current climate of high-demand leading to a slew of reprints?
Time will tell, but the aforementioned report, and Sony's decision, serve as a fearful reminder that anything is possible — even if the current report is a bunch of well-timed political malarkey designed for engagement farming (but that's for you to decide).
