A Few Good Laughs: 9 Overlooked Comedies You Need to Watch

18 hours ago 4

This will be my tenth post here on Bleeding Fool, so I’m keeping it brief and positive. In future, I hope to post more regularly, and delve deeper into film analysis and opinions. Maybe get a bit edgier. But mostly, I want to share some of the more obscure, underrated, and overlooked pieces of cinema that have largely passed under the cultural radar. Older films, foreign films, indies, obscure fantasies, unseen animation- doesn’t matter.

I’m a compulsive list maker, I’ll find material. What with Modern Hollywood acting as though the Ragnarok of creative ideas is upon them, and the obscene number of remakes they’re vomiting forth from the bowels of their talentless wells, it’s easy to forget that there is a vast wealth of hidden gems waiting to be rediscovered. Even if film, as an art, really is dead, it’s not like we’re bereft of stories. And in appreciation at being able to publish my somewhat rambling thoughts on this forum, and since we could all use us a laugh, I’ve decided to share a few comedies that may not be the cultural touchstones that others are, but that still provide a fun and much-needed relief from the Cultural Apocalypse surrounding us.

No particular order, though the last ones are the best.

The Frisco Kid (1979) – directed by Robert Aldrich. Starring – Gene Wilder, Harrison Ford. “I have read this book! I did not understand one word.”
