Starting in October, the world of the X-Men will be dramatically altered by every title traveling ten years into the future as part of the Age of Revelation crossover event. The setup of the event is based on the original Age of Apocalypse crossover, which came out 30 years ago, in which all the X-titles were replaced by alternate reality versions of the titles. Now, the X-titles will be replaced by titles set in the future. However, at the same time, there will ALSO be a different celebration of the Age of Apocalypse on its 30th anniversary by having the original Age of Apocalypse X-Men return, as well, written by Jeph Loeb, one of the original writers of the Age of Apocalypse!
Starting in this week's X-Men of Apocalypse: Alpha #1, the original X-Men from the alternate reality known as the Age of Apocalypse (so titled because Apocalypse was risen out of his slumber earlier than normal because of some time-traveling mutants, and so he conquered the world before superheroes were around to stop him), will return. They will then move on to a miniseries, X-Men of Apocalypse #1-4, before ending with X-Men of Apocalypse: Omega #1. This, of course, echoes how the original Age of Apocalypse was set up (six months' worth of books, beginning with an Alpha one-shot, four-issue series, and then an Omega one-shot). The second issue of the series will feature a stunning crossover between the X-Men of Apocalypse and...the original X-Men?!
How do the X-Men of Apocalypse meet the original X-Men?
From Marvel's press release announcing the event:
Taking place directly in the aftermath of Age of Apocalypse, X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE brings this iconic dystopia’s team of X-Men to the main Marvel Universe on a mission to ensure their reality’s survival! Their desperate quest puts them in conflict with their classic counterparts as well as fellow Age of Apocalypse escapee Nate Grey, A.K.A. X-Man, but their mission can only be accomplished by journeying to the team’s very foundation… It’s a trip to the Silver Age as these hard-edged and war-ravaged X-Men come face-to-face with the Strangest Teens of All—the Original X-Men!
After all, when you're traveling from an entire reality entirely, you never know what TIME you're going to show up in (as seen when the X-Men traveled to an alternate reality and ended up in the distant future, where they met the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise).
The covers for the issue are done by Simone Di Meo (the main artist on the book, who does the main cover pitting the two teams against each other), Arthur Adams, Russell Dauterman, Stephen Platt, Joshua “Sway” Swaby, and Joe Madureira, who was also one fo the original artists on the Age of Apocalypse (and who designed most of the alternate reality X-Men).
What does Jeph Loeb have to say about the Age of Apocalypse meeting the original X-Men?
Jeph Loeb had this to say about getting to write the original X-Men in this event:
It’s so much fun revisiting the first issue of the X-Men from 1963. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were at the height of their powers creating these legendary characters that are still dominate pop culture today! I love the original cast—young and full of hope—and that's what makes going up against the X-Men of Apocalypse so astonishing. The XoA team only knows a world of war and death while at this point the O.G. X-Men barely have had any experience! Whatever happens -- this one counts!
X-Men of Apocalypse #2 is due out on December 17th.
