Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, the leads of Alice in Borderland, joined international press members for a moderated discussion about the newly released season three of the series.
When it comes to defining traits of Arisu and Usagi, played by Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, fans would note their drive and passion, both things shared by the actors portraying the characters.
“To continue to take on challenges is motivating me also,” explained Yamazaki. This sentiment captures the essence of the series, where characters constantly face life-altering challenges, pushing themselves to their limits.
Tsuchiya echoed this, especially when it came to overcoming challenges as an actress.
Another actor echoed this by stating, “Even if it was something that I really struggled through, it makes me feel validated and happy to have taken on that work,” Tsuchiya said.
For one journalist from Malaysia, Usagi represents inner strength and wanted to know what Tsuchiya has learned from her character that has shaped her personally outside the screen.
“Perseverance, that she never gives up and she always acts for somebody else to protect someone, inspires me greatly,” Tsuchiya reflected. Connections to their characters reveal why these performances resonate so deeply with audiences.
The arrival of new faces in season three has added another layer to the storyline and the actors shared their thoughts on these dynamic interactions.
“Through communication, we build bonds,” Tsuchiya mentioned. “Human relationships are not easy, but you have to confront your vulnerability as well.”
Playing the same role over multiple seasons is no small feat, especially when balancing familiarity with character growth. As Yamazaki put it, confidence in overcoming challenges from past seasons plays a crucial part in the process.
“Going into three, that confidence never wavered,” Yamazaki noted, highlighting the continuous development alongside their characters.
In season three, fans are promised an exploration of deeper emotions and complex interpersonal dynamics.
Tsuchiya interpreted her character’s evolution with significant insight: “She has to face her weakness, her trauma… only after confronting and overcoming that will she be able to protect this family.”
Unlike past seasons, Yamazaki and Tsuchiya don’t share as many scenes in season three but interact more with new characters, requiring them to build chemistry with newcomers to Alice in Borderland.
Yamazaki mentioned, “We had, even between takes, would often talk about daily life,” showcasing how off-screen interactions help build authentic on-screen relationships.
SPOILER ALERT!
Towards the end of the season, there is a scene in the water that felt so realistic, and the conversation highlighted the meticulous preparations and team effort involved.
“It was the biggest set we had,” explained Tsuchiya. “The action team made sure it was very safe for us to go in before we shot.”
Finally, fans eager for insights into the upcoming season, hints were teased regarding Arisu’s journey. After enduring numerous trials, his character exhibits “fortitude… strength,” demonstrating growth and resilience.
“As we delve further into the third season,” Yamazaki summarized, “I think you will see those qualities in how he’s able to embrace others.”Catch Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya as Arisu and Usagi in the third season of Alice in Borderland, out now on Netflix.
