The following contains major spoilers for Avengers Assemble #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of Marvel's most classic teams of supervillains has gained an astonishing new member, and he is bigger than any before him.
Avengers Assemble #3 sees the eponymous team of heroes face off against none other than the Nightstalkers after the latter team of purported heroes turn their blades on the unsuspecting vampire populace of North Brother Island. Unsurprisingly, this attack serves to cover for yet another heist pulled off by the members of the Serpent Society, who are well on their way towards recreating a dangerously powerful artifact. When the villainous Boomslang expresses his overt frustration with the direction the team is headed, however, the Serpent Society's leader Pit Viper makes it clear just how little he is willing to listen to dissent, all by introducing the team's latest member, the towering Titanoboa, at the expense of Boomslang's life.

The team of snake-themed supervillains known as the Serpent Society first appeared in the pages of 1985's Captain America #310 by writer Mark Gruenwald and artist Paul Neary. At the time, the team was already made up of nearly a dozen members, which would only grow over the years. Though Pit Viper is the current leader of the group, his rule was preceded by those of Sidewinder, Viper, and King Cobra, each of whom have pushed the team in the same general direction.
Fans are currently awaiting the Serpent Society's silver screen debut courtesy of Captain America: New World Order. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's iteration of the Serpent Society is slated to be led by Seth Voelker, better known as Sidewinder, who will be portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito. While fans are looking forward to the Serpent Society's premiere appearance in the MCU, the question of whether they will be as ineffective as their comic book counterparts tend to be has provided no small amount of speculation.

Avengers Assemble has charted the formation of a new team of AVENG.E.R.S., or the Avengers Emergency Response Squad. This specific team was formed at the behest of Captain America following the events of Marvel Comics' recently concluded Blood Hunt crossover event, which saw the world plunged into an unending darkness and besieged by seemingly endless vampire swarms. Inspired by the way largely unconnected heroes came together to safeguard their home in the wake of the Blood Hunt, the AVENG.E.R.S. serve to carry out the kind of missions that would frequently fly under the ordinary Avengers' radar.
