An Iconic Villain Just Proved How Tough Marvel’s New Ultimate Spider-Man Really Is

3 days ago 5

The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #11, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's new Ultimate Spider-Man is finally leaving an appropriate impression on the villains of his own rogues gallery.

After a brutal encounter with Mister Negative and his Inner Demons, the titular hero of Ultimate Spider-Man #11 is left to return home battered and bruised for his efforts. While this might seem like a crushing defeat on the surface, it is in fact one of his greatest victories so far, at least as far as his enemies are concerned. Not only does Mister Negative explain to his fellow Sinister Six members the depths of Spider-Man's resilience, he notes that turning an entire swarm of otherwise innocent bystanders against the hero was his only hope of escaping with his own life and limbs intact.

First seen in Free Comic Book Day 2007: Spider-Man #1 in Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez' opening story "Swing Shift," the villainous Mister Negative is a powerful gang lord who rules over the Inner Demons. Formerly a member of the Chinese Snakehead gang, the man who would be Mister Negative worked to smuggle immigrants into the United States up until a disastrous crash derailed his usual dealings. In the aftermath, the man stole the identity of one of the other passengers, Martin Li, and attempted to reunite with his gang's American counterparts. Instead, "Martin Li" was kidnapped by the Maggia after the rest of his gang was murdered, leaving him to be traded off to the underworld chemist Simon Marshall.

Under Simon's twisted care, "Martin Li" was subjected to the same experiments that transformed Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen into Cloak and Dagger. Instead of gaining direct command over the Darkforce or Lightforce as his fellow test subjects did, "Martin Li" was imbued with a portion of control over each and gave rise to his identity as Mister Negative. With his powers, Mister Negative can not only take control over others he comes into contact with, he can supercharge their own abilities and even heal grievous wounds and dire illnesses. Thanks to these abilities, Mister Negative and his Inner Demons had no problem rising through the ranks of the criminal underworld and becoming a prominent fixture of the modern Marvel Universe's New York City landscape.

One of the most lethal teams of Marvel heroes has just made a much-needed comeback, but this time around they aren't the good guys.

Though there is no telling how much of the original Mister Negative's personal story still holds true in the new Ultimate Universe, the latter iteration of the character is still very much a prominent crime lord in its version of NYC. As one of the Sinister Six, Mister Negative and his Inner Demons rule over an entire borough unto themselves, albeit at the behest of none other than the Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk, who himself was counted as a member of the Maker's Council. Currently, this Sinister Six consists of the Kingpin, Mister Negative, Msyterio, Kraven the Hunter, the Mole Man, and the Black Cat, aka Felicia Hardy, who has taken her father's mantle and place at the table following his disastrous encounter with Spider-Man and the Green Goblin.
