Another DCU Project Axed As ‘The Authority’ No Longer Happening

James Gunn has confirmed that The Authority is not moving forward in the current DC slate, adding to concerns about the long term direction of his rebooted universe.

The DCU has seen some early wins. Creature Commandos earned strong reactions, and Gunn’s Superman film in 2025 drew attention as a major reset for the brand. Peacemaker season two also performed well, while Supergirl is set for a June release and Lanterns is expected in August. A teaser for Clayface, written by Mike Flanagan, recently gave fans a first look at another darker project.

Still, not every announcement has held together. Several titles introduced when Gunn and Peter Safran took over Warner Bros. have stalled or disappeared. Arkham Asylum is no longer in development, and projects like The Brave and the Bold and Teen Titans remain uncertain. The Authority now joins that growing list of stalled ideas. Other DCU projects that have stalled are Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, Waller, and Swamp Thing.

Gunn addressed the situation directly on Threads after fans speculated about the film’s status. He pushed back on claims that he planned to write or direct The Authority, saying he never had time and never intended to take it on himself. He confirmed a script existed but said it failed to meet expectations and did not fit the larger DCU plan.

“The script wasn’t quite there,” Gunn wrote. “More importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

The Authority was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1999. The series focused on a more aggressive superhero team compared to the Justice League. Interest grew after the character Engineer appeared in Superman, which hinted that Gunn might build toward the team on screen.

For now, that plan appears shelved. Some characters from The Authority could still appear in future DCU projects, but the film itself is off the table. The setback raises new questions about whether Gunn’s larger strategy is as stable as advertised, especially as more early announcements quietly fall apart.
